I could be imagining this but on my way into work this morning i noticed that my clutch pedal was really floppy. The car drives fine and i can still get all the gears, from reading the post by Lee further down would it appears i have the same problem or could it be something different with me still getting all the gears? Its only floopy half way down and it seems to have happened over night. Ill check the clutch fluid later.

Floppy? I'm guessing that the pedal travels freelywith no resistance to low down in the arc and then engages/disengages? This has happened to me on SEVERAL occasions as well as others (I'm sure there are a few posts scattered about). The two sleeves of the clutch cylinder need to ride perfectly true over one another. Any angulation at all results in leak of clutch fluid (which I personally never noticed) and the entire situation goes pear-shaped. You may have caught it early enough to salvage the situation, but in my cases it's always resulted in clutch replacement. Hope this isn't the case! Fingers crossed for you.

Ive looked at the other posts and the only thing different is the fact that i can still change all the gears as normal. If it is the clutch, how much am i talking from an indie?

When I had this it was down to failing seals on the master cylinder. It should cost you around £400 at an indy to get the seals replaced on both the master and slave.

I have just had the same symptoms develop...is it contageous?!

Drove into work AM... all OK. Got into car to go home in the evening....pedal had little resistance for first half of normal travel, but I could still get gears. Got home. Went to put car in garage an hour or so later...could get no gears at all.

The slave cylinder seals were changed 16 months ago when the engine was out.

Fluid levels are OK and car only recently serviced. All I can say is... AR$E!

Jon, Ive had to replace the master once and the slave twice in the past 18 months (master only cost £50, slave involves gearbox out IIRC so, as they say, about £4-500)

Odd you say the fluid levels are ok though. Should be tell tale damp patches on either the garage floor or driver's footwell. I doint think I lost all my fluids, just some, so maybe you have just not enough to show up glaringly?

The car was recently serviced, and I asked for the fluid to be changed as I had no idea how long it had been in (had the ar just over a year when serviced) The car has also been standing for a month for one reason and another, so I am hoping that perhaps there was some air lurking in the system as a result of the fluid change and that a bleed of the system will sort it. Footwell was dry when I looked at it... I will have a look on the carpark where I was parked yesterday to see if I can see anything.

If the footwell is dry you may be VERY lucky and its 'only' the master seal. Much more pocket friendly that one

Fingers crossed for you

Well the numpty of the week award goes to... ME!!

Fluid levels were OK...in the BRAKE reservoir!! I completely forgot that the clutch resevoir is separate and hidden under a cover which itself is hidden under another cover! (a case of RTFM really, as it is explained in the owners handbook)

So...once I was checking the correct reservoir, I found very low fluid levels and dirty looking fluid. New fluid and a bleed (purged plenty through to get rid of all the old stuff) and voila! My clutch is back, for the moment at least.

The big question now is did it all go suddenly, or is it just a very slow decline in levels until air was able to enter the system through the reservoir. As there is no evidence if a fluid leak in the car or on the drive/garage floor, I am hoping it is the latter. Only time will tell!

If I were you, I would start investigating the cost of getting the seals replaced on both the slave and the master. I had exactly the same symptoms a couple of years back. Filling up the reservoir every so often kept me going for a couple of months, but it will let go eventually, and just when you don't want it to

I'd also recommend getting both the slave and master done at the same time, as the stronger new seals on one of them can increase the pressure on the other older seal and cause it to go south. I managed 500yards before that happened when I only changed the master cylinder seal.

If the fluid is dirty then the 'dirt' is bits of old seal so its time to change the master seals at least. However as has already been said don't be surprised if the slave seals are also on the way out

Jools does a seal kit made from better material
