in the bottom pic it would appear that the chassis at some time was deliberately butchered maybe to remove the starter !!!!

The rot does not look too bad, at least your tubing is all still there. It will be back together bu the end of the week then

Interesting what you said about the chassis being butchered to remove the starter motor. I cannot quite see from the photo, but on my S1 I think it is just the same! I'm in the middle of doing a body off restoration and noticed the engine mounting bracket on the chassis, near to the starter motor, has a very roughly cut rectangular hole in it. It does look like it is there to clear the terminals on the starter motor.

Must have been an afterthought when they were 'designing' the chassis which has carried on to later models.
