Take your time on the initial few laps, beware local heroes who drive round in stripped out cars as if they live at the circuit!
The surface can also be a bit 'changeable' with some parts rougher than others. Took my original Cerbera there (std suspension on 18" Spiders) and felt like I had dislodged a few fillings at the end of the day!
(Although I should point out is has been a few years since I was there, so this may be better now?)
Also watch out for:
a: bikes (Their closing speed to you is more difficult to judge)
and b: strange vehicles circulating, like minibuses, vans and even motorhomes!! (I kid you not!)
Above all else enioy the time you are there and driving round what is one of the most awesome tracks in the world!

Was there a few weeks back in my Elan.

I stayed at the Ring Campsite so can't help with other places to stay.

The carpark to the entrance barrier can be nightmarish. If it is busy I'd advise waiting for a clearer opportunity.

First lap I'd do to take away nerves and get a rough understanding of the track. Try to wave to the crowds too!

Overall I'd advise you don't be a hero and stay within limitations. After all it is you and your baby out there1 There are plenty of stunning local roads you can play on for free and without the cost of repairing armco etc!

I and others got away with secure bullet cam set ups so I'd take it along if you have such kit.

Also be aware that the track is often closed for races and after severe accidents.

The carosel parts are weird and I took the top the sloped part is made from very bumpy concrete slabs.

Have fun! I did! thumbup and have of course the all important badge of honour

Have a look at this website, great info on the ring.
www.heiser.net/documents/nurburgring/

And like mentioned by Cerby4.5 be very carefull, some locals practicly live there, they know every inch of the track, trying to keep up with them is suicide. After about 50 laps it starts to look a bit familiar, anyway that's how long it took me before i started to know the track (a little). Even after that many laps the ring keeps surprising me. And don't forget, people die here every year !!
On the track you can find VW's (transporter and beetles) tourbusses and all sorts of vehicles and motorcycles, the difference in speed can be dramatic, allways keep an eye out.

If you see the ringtaxi (Sabine) make way, she hates people that don't look in their rearview mirrors and use all of the track. Forget about keeping up with her, i have tried on a small bit of the ring that i (thought) i knew, she is in a class of her own. She has a nice cafe in town, if she is there she sometimes chats with customers and gives you tips. A bit of a petrolhead, hmmm, VBH comes to mind.

In short if you are carefull you can have a great time there.

Fred

PS here's a downloadlink for a small movie about a round with the ringtaxi, look at the poor German reporter LOL
http://rapidshare.de/files/6806554/WD
She says she has done about 14.000 laps so far and does about a 1000 more each year.

Thanks for the replys, have no offside wing mirror on car and have just noticed on Nurburgring website that you need both wing mirrors. I think this could now be a problem unless i can get a new one fixed before monday.

For a hotel try - www.ringhaus.com/

We stayed there at the beginning of August, and found it clean, tidy, and the benefit that it's only a couple of hundred mtrs from the main gate and circuit car parks.

Frank there's a top bloke and speaks full English aswell as most of the staff. More often than not he's got GT4 set up in the bar on a projector screen so on the night you can have a beer and practice away for the following day.

If your into the walking thing, the castle's about a ten minute walk in the opposite direction from the track, always closed every time we went up there, but non the less the views are still quite good.

I'd recommend before going on the track to drive around to several of the view points around to get an idea of some of the loons who go there and the speeds they travel at. Most people seem to be good but there's always that one, normally it's the nutter in his company 5 series BM estate that worries me.

When on the track, pootle around for a lap or so getting use to the surface, gradiants, cambers and blind bends, don't worry to much if your tyres are squeeling, even going slowly they'll still do it. Remember to use your mirrors (alot), if quicker cars are coming keep to the right, and indicate in to let them know you've seen them, other than that, drive within your limits and enjoy yourself, you won't be dissapointed.

A good site also for info on the track is - www.nurburgring.org.uk/

I've also stuck on a couple of pics of the circuit to get you in the mood, enjoy.

Should be on the Monday 4.30pm Dover to Calais if I can get wing mirror sorted. Driving down from Cheshire.
Would be better to get the Hull to Zeebrugge but its so bloody expensive, five times the price of the Dover crossing.

Hopefully should be on the circut Tuesday 17.15 to 19.30 if anyone else is about.

It's the greatest track in the world bar none and by a long way. Stunning scenery and every possible type of corner you can imagine plus a few you can't. It's also been resurfaced recently which has led to much improved wet and dry grip.

The main downside of the 'ring is that it takes many, many laps to learn. Personally I find that playstation doesn't help at all. In fact you're more likely to get caught out if you think you know the circuit. You can learn the basic gist of most UK circuits in a single trackday. Not so the ring. I did over 20 laps there (each lap is around 10 mins until you know where you're going) this year and I'm not even close to learning the track. Only the locals really know their way round which is why they're so fast, they know the flat out bits from the 'dab of brakes, looks like 3rd gear but is actually flat in 4th' bits. Many of them have crashed to get the circuit knowledge they have and this is what makes a crappy hatchback quicker than a Griff around there. Just accept it (it's hard sometimes trust me) let the mk 1 golf gti by and enjoy the stunning scenery.

You will push your car much harder on a UK trackday but the upside is your tyres and brakes etc should be fine after a few laps around the 'ring. The reason is you can't be too committed as many of the corners have blind apexes. This presents you with the horror scenario of a flying round a bend to see a biker, sans bike, lying in the middle of the road. It doesn't often happen, but it's worth remembering that it can happen.

If it pours with rain I actually recommend getting plenty of laps in. For one most people tend to go home at the first drop of moisture so the place will be virtually empty, you won't even try to go too quick (I hope!), you can learn the track at your leisure and indulge in a little low gear hairpin hoonery at very little risk to yourself or the car. Huge fun.

Motoring nirvana awaits!

I think Spa runs it close.

I think the it's been resurfaced is a bit misleading as the whole track has not been, I think Nurburgring Gmbh are keeping people on their toes by resurfacing different bits to ensure differing grip levels round the circuit

Just got back, Fantastic couple of days with great weather. Nurburg is very pretty and the Nurburgring is the dogs. Be careful if you go its so addictive and you won't wanna come home. There was a GT40 and a couple of SLRs there never mind all the GT3s and Fezzas. Booked four laps - about £40, did three myself and the misses had a go as well. We were overtaken by everything, the locals are just so quick and the bikes are scary fast but it was still an amazing experience driving round hood down with the crowds around the track cheering and waving at the Griff we were not the quickest but we sure sounded good. Misses timed my second lap at 10.48(will have to learn that track)

Cannot wait till we go again and will try and learn the track so maybe we won't get overtaken as much. driving

Note from the Misses:
He didn't time my lap cos he knew I'd be faster ... rofl
