Apparently it is not possible to racially discriminate against white men. It's been going on for some time in the public sector and most police forces. Welcome to Blairs'/Browns' Britain.

Are you sure this is true? really really sure.
If it is, and I must say I doubt it then a massive breach of discremination in employment rules are afoot.

Exactly how would the Police define 'ethnic'? this is where my doubt begins.

I think it's almost certainly true. There was a big story about this last year, but I can't for the life of me remember any details at the mo.

This IS happening right now. You don't hear about it because the media will not report it. It is not considered discrimination if it is against white people. It is merely "Employers reflecting the diverse makeup of the local community". The daft thing is it only creates more ill feeling.

BTW The Met say that ethnicity is self declared. They will not say how they would act if an obviously white applicant claimed to be black.

Positive discrimination is NOT lawful,

If the Police are really saying that the only reason for not hiring your friend was his skin colour then they are guilty of discrimination and can be prosequted they do not have an exemption.

I think you mean positive action which is something different. Positive action is about creating a level playing field for applicants, not about accepting someone for a post based on their ethincity.

Job is advertised.
People go through the application process.
Those most suitable are offered a job based on merit.
There is nothing to say they have to be offered a start date based on the order they passed the job application.

It amounts to the same thing though doesn't it?

"Yes, you've got the Job. Now you don't mind waiting for three years before you start do you?"

No, the best people for the job got the job, it didn't matter what their ethnic origins were. Nobody has been given a job or refused one because of their ethnic origin.
If you are a white male & had the right qualities, you'll be offered a position.
It may not be immeadiate but you'll have the job offer.

Do you really and I mean REALLY believe what you wrote above?

Would you accept a job offer if you had to wait three years before you could start? The Met and other Forces are well aware of what they are doing. They may technically be working within the rules but they are way outside the spirit of the rules.

BTW Avon and Somerset have already been found guilty of racially discriminating against white applicants. It's strange how no action was taken?

Look at the actual intakes.
There are a variety of ethnic groups represented on them, including white males.

I don't have access to those figures. Care to enlighten us?

Any comment on Avon and Somerset?

I haven't got figures (other than as of 31st March 2006 minority ethnic officers made up 3.7% of total Police numbers, up from 3.5% as of 31st March 2005, so hardly a huge increase), but I see plenty of white male probationary constables with my own eyes.
Regards Avon & Somerset, I haven't seen anything to do with that.

Telegraph article said:
Under the 1976 Race Relations Act, it is illegal to give preference to a job applicant on the grounds of race.

The dispute comes after Avon and Somerset Police admitted last month that it broke the law when it rejected 186 job applications from white men on the grounds of race and gender. The force agreed an out-of-court settlement with one man, who had filed a claim for sex and race discrimination.

The Met has been told that, within three years, its workforce should go from 7.5 per cent to 25 per cent ethnic minorities.

"A Police force that broke sex and race discrimination laws with its recruitment policy has paid an undisclosed sum to a disappointed job applicant who was rejected solely because he was a white man.
Avon and Somerset police discarded nearly 200 applications from young white men after a recruitment drive last year to give greater opportunity to women and ethnic minority candidates. It claimed that white males were “over- represented” on the force."

www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,200-2086234,00.html

"The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) has taken no action against Avon and Somerset Police, despite concluding that the force was guilty of unlawful discrimination in its recruitment.

Last November, the Avon and Somerset force rejected 186 white applicants because its workforce was “over-represented by white men”."

Stinks to high heaven, wouldn't you agree?

Ah Well Guys, Maybe this aint too bad. If we take the South African model then perhaps you can avail yourselves of various chemical compounds and women of dubious virtue simply by being stopped. Even if you don't wish to partake of these rather excellent lifestyle options then it's simply a case of agreeing to partake in a personal contribution towards supporting our underpaid , overworked servants of society. You know your'e lucky!!

I have received lengthy (and pretty tedious) recruitment and selection training. Universities encourage diversity and are all equal ops employers. It was made absolutely clear to me that positive discrimination was as illegal as negative discrimination.

This smacks of the Police being treated differently when the law is applied to them, and is a great shame because it will only damage still further the publics confidence in them - which is NOT a good thing in my view.
