Discussion
about to commence a chassis restoration of my s3,first step being removing the body.(any advise much appreciated!!!)seem to have sussed most of it out apart from two questions, does the petrol tank have to be removed b4 the body and how many people were needed to support it properly and lift it,
any ideas much welcome,cheers.

Hi
leave tank on but disconnect big fuel line that has the heat shielding on.
Just done the same on a V8S.
Manpower, i think its easier and more controlled to use two chain hoists, one at each end as the body needs to be nose down to extract it from top chassis rails around manifolds.

cheers guys, that helps a bit.thought it would have to be nose dived to get it off.good news about petrol tank as it looks very awkward with the body on.in the middle of disconnecting stuff just now but hoping to be removing the body at the weekend.will let u know how i get on and should be able to post some pictures if anyone else is interested.cheers
taking the body off,is this a seriously hard job or could competent car diy'er attempt it.my outriggers need doin at some point but quotes im getting are very high i realise it takes a long time but frustrating thing is actual parts are not the expense.is body shell likly to crack in places when lifted?
It is time consuming and you need a lot of space and mates to lift and store the body. Yes it is easy to crack if not supported well.
My tips are to label everything and take photos so that you have a reference to reassemble the car with. Note where the packing went between the body and the chassis and be prepraed for body bolts that won't undo or come off. Don't force anything when lifting and have plenty of bodies around including one who can free or guide things as necessary. Remove the bonnet as well.
Might be worth removing seats, roof etc to reduce weight and keep the doors and boot shut and this will help stop the body from twisting and cracking.

so far so good, have now disconnected everything i need to to remove the body.(i hope) so far it has'nt been too difficult.it took two of us about six hours to remove/undo everything.hardest part so far was getting the exhaust off, the front pipes were solid into the manifold.managed to discon the speedo, reverse switch and hand brake from under the car.if you are going to try this at home be prepared for thousands of cable ties, tvr must have got a job lot on them as they are everywhere.looks like body lift through the week now when i get enough peaple together at the same time.
