As did Moss at Aintree, he took over Brook's car. As said above perfectly legal during the 1950's, happened many times.

Yes, Collins gave up his car to Fangio in the final race of '56, apparently without being requested to do so, despite the fact that he could have won the championship. Collins said that he didn't want the pressure and attention of being world champion and that it wouldn't have seemed fair to win because of Fangio's mis-fortune (whose car had broken). As other's have pointed out, team-mates sharing their cars with each other was commonplace in the 1950's.

It seems to me that whilst Collins was very selfless in giving up his car and with it the chance to become champion, it shows that he didn't have the ruthlessness necessary to succeed.
