I brought a PC a about 8 months ago, it will run fine for hours unless I play a game or use Google Earth on it. After playing a game for about 30 mins to an hour it makes a rapid beeping noise and turns off. It done this for a few weeks then the PSU blew. I sent it back and the company said it was a faulty PSU so they replaced it. However after the repair it would do exactly the same thing. So I sent it back before the PSU blew again. But they now claim they can't find any fault with the PC. I installed one of the those software temperature monitors and it says the motherboard temperature is varying between 40C and 115C!!! which seems very hot to me. Also it says the PSU is running at about 70C.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Before I send it back for a third time or take it somewhere else to be repaired. I don't really want another PC as I have so much already on this one.

Don't necessarily believe m/b temperature sensors - it depends on where and how they are mounted as to how accurate they are.

Saying that, the symptoms you describe are consistent with overheating - especially when doing graphics-intensive work (games, Google Earth).

First things first, what's the temperature in the room like? Is it a sunny, south-facing room?

Where is the PC physically located? Are the vent holes in the case obscured?

What kind of video card do you have? Does it have a heatsink and fan? Is the fan working?

How many case fans to you have and where are they located in the box?

It's not in a south facing room, and it does seem to run for longer when when I remove the side of the PC. The graphics card is a radeon x1300 512mb, it has a heat sink but no fan. The only fans are the one on the CPU and one in the PSU. There are vent holes in the side of the PC opposite the CPU fan.

No offense but rather than diagnostics on a new machine I'd phone them up and tell them it's still broken; it's the pain in the ass route I know but it's probably better than ripping the machine open and possibly invalidating the warranty.

sounds like overheating definitely to me... get them to check that the heatsink and fan have a good thermal connection to the processor (i.e. a thin layer of thermal paste) and when you send it to them to check out tell them to run some demanding software on it! Sounds a fairly reproducible problem to me so they should be able to make it happen easily.

It's also possible that the temperature sensors are buggered and telling the motherboard the processor is hotter than it is so it is shutting down. At the end of the day it is their problem so kick their arse a bit!

Sounds like you need a fan on the video card and at least a couple on the case - for preference one sucking air in at the bottom front of the case and another sucking out at the top rear (or as near as your case allows).

The fact that it runs better with the side off is telling - it really ought to run better with the side on if the airflow through the case is right.
