Went up to the North York Moors and surroundings at the start of the week...here are some of my favourites. Full-size pics (some of these seem to have lost a little crispness), plus another dozen or so decent pics, are at http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m5

Seagull, Whitby pier

Obelisk on the Moors

Comments/advice/suggestions for improvement very welcome.

The only downside to the weekend is I think the local constabulary took MY picture while I was driving off the moors!

I like number 3, plus the obelisk, and also the first and third of the abbey.

It's odd that some of these are really sharp (obelisk, abbey) and some are a bit soft (whitby pier, seagul). Are you using one the same lens for all of these?

All bar the last one are with the same lens - the stock 18-55 Canon (which admittedly isn't the best in the world). Was just trying a bunch of different styles and scenes, see what worked or not.

As for 'crispness' - I know what you mean. The seagull one was deliberately tried with a shorter depth-of-field, while I think the oak-tree and abbey have lost some definition in the re-sizing - they've been reduced by a factor of about 3 or 4 in both directions to get them to fit on the page. Not sure why they're affected more than the others, possibly because of the 'surface area' in contact with sky. Hell, possibly the auto-focus on the lens got it slightly wrong.

I love the pre-sunrise sky...seem to be getting good at them, although probably right place right time, just as Borneo.
#2 I like. I got the effect I was after, but I think it's missing a little something, not sure what though...

For optimum appearance you always need to re-sharpen after re-sizing. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a "one size fits all" set of values for re-sharpening to get the best results so you'll either need to do it manually or do it as a batch and accept some will look a bit soft and others possibly over-sharpened.
