Morning all,

Ok, so this morning was the first "chilly" morning for a long time. Two problems here.

1. There's a gale in my helmet (oh er)
2. The visor refuses to stop fogging up.

So by the time I get to work, my eyes have been streaming until silly red and bloodshot, and my lenses are giving me a bit of grief. I realise I've posted on here before about helmet skirts and anti fog thingys, but nothing has worked for me. Any other advice before I look for a new helmet? Also, without riding in it at 100mph, how do I know a replacement helmet isnt gonna be exactly the same?

I'd appreciate any advice,

Cheers.

In my opinion it has to be a Shoei XR1000, I have the Rutter replica it is very quiet(ish) with vents that work and Shoei have the 'plastic thingy' you put on the inside which stops misting even when its minus 1!!

Have you tried a proprietary anti fog cloth/solution. Misting or fogging is usually caused by a dirty visor - not that you could see it at the level that causes misting though. Keeping it super clean helps. Mind you, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a new Shoei - my Arai felt like a Colander this morning (mind you so did my gloves, my jacket, my trousers)....!!!

Got to get something warm to wear underneath, or the bike goes away at the weekend!!!!

If you visor keeps misting up, try one of these :-

Foggy Respro

I've tried all sorts of products over the years, some that work for a few hours, some longer, but this beats them all and won't get damaged or scratched and stop working.

Seconded. Works all the time, but does tend to leave my nose feeling a little pinched unless I wiggle until its comfy. The chap who invented them recently sold one of his 999 race bikes, as the living room was getting overcrowded. Lucky devil

With regard to helmets, try as many on as you can, somewhere where the sales staff actually know what they are doing. AGV/Shoei/Arai etc all come with graded inserts so you should be able to get a perfect fit. Seem to recall reading that the perfect fit should actually feel a bit small when new, as the padding compresses.

Which leads to a supplementary question - why doesnt anyone do an inflate/deflate device for the inside, so it can always be an absolutely perfect fit? (c) Me , 2006

I have a KBC (AR1).
Yeah, I'd never heard of it either!! Whist I was doing my DAS the instructiors took us round to various shops generally showing us the ropes, and I picked it out. He said it was a good helmet, had all the rights stickers on it, and had removable pads....SO I bought it!!

I got a Shoei X-Spirit just before I went to Slovenia.
Brilliant helmet, really comfy and with the pinlock it never mists up. If I have to complain about something then it's maybe a bit noisy when I don't have earplugs in, but it's rare that I'm not wearing them.
I got a great deal on it because I just wanted a black one rather than a multi coloured.

Get a new helmet. I'd recommend Arai or Shoei. I've got a Shoei now and it's pretty good although I reckon my Arai was less breezy in the winter.

Chilli,

Go to Infinity Motorcycles in Great Portland Street, it may be a small shop but the guys there especially James are top notch and they have most makes apart from Shark. They stock all makes but I would only ever buy Arai, that's my personal choice and I've been using Arai lids since I was 10 years old and I wouldn't now buy another make.

Best thing to do is try on all the different makes (Infinity have these at the shop) and then choose which one fits best and have a bit of an open budget as Arai's and Shoei's don't come cheap.

Best of luck.

Andy.

Cheap anti-fog tip is to wipe on a smear of washing up liquid onto the inside of the visor, then polish until you get a clear view.

Lasts quite a while if done well.

Yeah, tried this, but doesn't seem to work well for me.

Thanks though.

Used to do this with the motocross goggles.

Fine until it starts raining! Stings like buggery!!!

Try on lots of helmets as the shape suits some heds better than others.

I have a Tour-x, A Schuomi (spelling?) and a BMW System something (not the bluetooth version). Quietest and most comfortable by a long way is the BMW. Would have liked a flip-front with built in sun visor, but my head does not fit in the ones I have found.

Hear, hear.

Alongside Shoei, Arai and BMW, I can highly recommend Schuberth. If it fits you, I personally found the Schuberth S1 to be the best thing on the market currently. (Also available from Infinity at Great Portland St.)

Schuberth make Michael Schumacher's lids, the S1 did great in the RiDE impact tests, it exudes the same quality as Arai/Shoei and it's lovely and quiet. Full of neat features too, such as a sun visor and a form of air con that still works when the visor's closed.

Vote for Shoei here fit my melon head a treat when others fail, but best bit about 'em is you can peel off the s & the i & have hoe on the front of ya lid
