I am sure that anyone in business has asked this question, a hundred times.
Over the years, I have spent thousands of pounds on advertising and using internet companies to advise on website methods.
Can someone, please advise me on how to get the best out of my site?
Is it still all about META tags and paying search engines to put you at the top of page one?

I’ve read a couple of SE optimizing articles which basically say that the only way to get better coverage is from other popular sites being listed with links to your site. If you type in your site to google, the 2nd entry is your profile from a forum.

So having your site affiliated with appropriate sites (PH?) is probably a good place to start.

BTW: your site looks a little amateur (sorry).

hehe Indeed. Also make sure your profile(s) on websites link to it as well. Like mine does, I see a lot of traffic from PH with people just ambling in to the site to find out more about the idiot posting.

400k members here I belive, so talk to Ted about an advert (hint: go for one of the top banners or ikkle forum picture ones as apparently their are more styles but I never see them).

Play the google metrics game, pay them for a sponsored link and/or AdWords advertising... usual stuff really.

I'm assuming you're talking about this site:

www.cherishedmarks.net/

Well, just sticking with search engines for now, there are a number of things you could do that might make a difference:

1. Metatags - you have none. Metatags should contain an accurate description of your site and relevant keywords, but don't overdo it.
2. You're selling personalised numberplates, right? Think about what visitors to your website will be searching for - for example the phrase "personalised numberplates" doesn't appear once on your site.
3. Learn CSS.

That should do to start with...

Its not about hits or driving traffic to your site - thats relatively easy. Its about driving the right traffic to your site.

What we've found over the years is that generating the right traffic to a website is a two fold thing:

1. the website is merely the outlet, its the shop front in a very economical package eg no rent, no rates, low running costs etc. to get punters in the door then you need to do the normal marketing things like google and so forth. even advertising on PH for instance. there are no short cuts.

2. gadgets. web clients just LOVE web gadgets. find something that people can fiddle with on your website and they will be there for hours. if its cherished numbers you are offering - then the simple search is not good enough. you need to get some cool looking search buttons up like your competition does.

Also, if we are talking the cherished numbers website - is needs to be improved. the current webdesigner needs to be shot, and a new one installed double quick. webdesign needs to be slick and simple html isn't going to cut it. the website is a reflection of the service you offer. If the site is half hearted, then the perception can be negative.

On a slightly different note, if it is cherished numbers - then as a suggestion (I was looking for one a few months ago) get a really easy to use search function as your competition have absolutely RUBBISH search facilities. I have a plate 1906VC, and I would like to get something close to it. The searches offered by the companies on Google are absolutely garbage. If the search pattern doesn't match what they are offering, then you can't search easily for it.

If you can develop a number of search options that allow better searching than your competition then you will steal a march on them.

If you don't have time to learn decent coding treat yourself to a WYSIWUG webpage builder, frontpage, dreamweaver, iweb (for the macs) etc. Choose a template and already you site will look better. Goto page property type menus and you'll be able to add all the discriptions and tags that you can think of... without even knowing how they work www.dmoz.org is a good one to get one.. my site hit there and within a month it was on all search engines.

I'd suggest spending some of that money on having someone design a website that people would want to visit twice. To echo earlier comments, I'm afraid this really looks like it's been put together in a teenager's bedroom on a wet Saturday afternoon - that's not going to encourage anyone to part with their hard-earned.

Because I like you and had nothing better to do to day I have done you a quick nice and simple flash site. You can have it for free if you wont it, how nice am I and you wonder why I never make any money. Its not going to get you more hits but it looks a bit better than the site you have already. Cant be bothered putting the search thing on you can just put that on the HTML page under the flash animation. Had know idea what the under construction was about but put a link on anyway.

Check it out www.roomnine.co.uk/images/PH1.htm

I will email the flash file to you if you wont it.

Bloody hell! That looks so much better.
Thanks for that.
If you PM me or send me an e-mail with your contact details, I would like to hear more.
Remember, I sell cars and registration numbers, but do not design or understand the building of websites.
Your gesture is kindly accepted.

Much better design, but I would stay away from flash. Im sure someone could convert the design to html/css for a small fee.

I wasn’t meaning to be rude. My dislike of flash is with compatibility (clients browser, loading times..etc) and search engines (especially relevant to this thread). I also have a dislike for flash heavy sites, although that’s not a problem here. IMO, 90% of cases dont require or benifet from flash.

Why stay away from nonoflashnono, ok probably would have been just as easy to do it in HTML but I need the practise in Flash.

Because Flash designs usually fail some basic accessibility and usability tests:
- Does text scaling work (increase/decrease font size), and do graphics in the layout expand and contract to accommodate?
- Is it readable with reader technology (JAWS, IBM Homepage Reader, etc) for visually impaired users?
- Is the layout fluid? If you resize the window smaller and larger does it reflow so that all meaningful content is still displayed and preserve the overall layout?
- Does it work equally well on all current browser types, typified by IE, Safari, Firefox, Opera?

Your design is visually pleasing and could easily be written in CSS to satisfy these criteria.

Personally I'd limit the use of Flash to eye candy on a splash page (although it seems even that is enough to put many web users off, which is not what we're setting out to achieve).

How about using a template like these. Stay away from the Flash stuff though.

The reason PH does so well is due to the frequently updated content, ie the forum. Maybe have a page as a Blog, and update it daily?

Also, the more 'quality' links you have to your site the better. So get it on dmoz, PistonHeads. Type link: followed by the url of your competitors in google to see where they're listed and add your site too.

As others have suggested, I'd certainly advertise on here. Better to have one serious person looking, than a hundred just browsing.

fraid i'm in the no-flash website camp on this one. the problem with flash can be summed up fairly easily; they are usually rubbish.

flash is good for components within a website, eg you want to show how a gearbox works, maybe exploding the picture, and putting it together again and so forth. but when flash is used as the whole website - it just doesn't hang together cohesively in most cases.

you end up with a very rigid website that is difficult and expensive to maintain, and for the unsuspecting customer they can get their balls ripped off by the webdesigner in the long run if there is a dispute about the bill. (what novice customer remembers to ask for the flash source code?).

contractually, having a flash website is up there with having your webdesigner host your site for you, "pay the bill or the website gets it". customer 0 webdesigner 1 everytime.
