Only just been introduced to this site and found that just such a camera exists on a roundabout I use twice a day!
(not that I jump lights but my right foot has been a bit heavy when leaving work late and not much traffic about)

Traffic Light Cameras
Gatsometer BV, manufacturer of the UK's Red Light Cameras, (named Gatso RLC 36) has been producing RLC's since 1966.
The RLC system is triggered by sensors or ground loops that are cut into road surface as a vehicle passes over them, while a red light is shown.
The Red Light Camera was originally used to measure red light offences. Nowadays the RLC can also be used in combination with speed measurement, similar to that of a Gatso Meter rear facing speed camera (radar type 24 technology) and can therefore also record the speed of the offending motorist as well. So you could end with a speeding offence as well as a traffic light offence, if you go through a red light camera!

I wondered about big brother checking my speed through the lights as well so I checked with him.
So for Oz (well West anyway), the red light camera is not armed until one second after the light turns red. That way they only photo a vehicle that has well and truly run the red. The camera is programmed to take two photos.
Now while it is true that this could be used to calculate the speed through the lights I was told they use it to see if the vehicle has stopped just over the line. That way they don't issue tickets to those who have been caught out trying to stop, have just missed the line, and haven't really run the red.
I know this sound a bit to logical to come from the powers that be but it seems to be the case over here.
Considering that the camera doesen't arm until one second (a long time if you think about it) after the lights have changed to red, I reckon anyone who gets pinged deserves it.
Caveate. Have been known to sit on my motorbike for ages in the middle of the night with nobody around waiting for the light to change..........what do you do?

Get off and push it across the pedestrian crossing? 
Gatso red light cameras always have recorded the vehicles speed. They are not used to prosecute speeds because you cannot receive two fixed penalties for one piece of multi offence driving. The red light is though to be the greater danger and the FPT is sent for that offence and not the speed.

My main concern was that the camera could be used as a speed camera separately from being a red light camera, IMO if you run a red light above the speed limit then you deserve all you get, however this roundabout is huge and is four lanes in places (where the camera is), and at 11pm and no other traffic around, the 40 mph limit seems a little overly restrictive.
I, like rjo, have sat there at a red light in the middle of the night, with no other traffic around for 2-3 minutes (which can feel like a very long time) wondering "who would know?"

Personally, hooning through a traffic light has to be *the* most stupid thing one could do. The lights indicate that traffic crosses one another in the direct path.
Maybe i'm 'sad' or just plain 'numpty', but I've always tended to slow down for traffic lights. Perhaps I've just been brought up on too much "police camera action" but the chances of some other dick head jumping the red in the other direction is just too much for me to take on trust, hence I treat the lights as "advisory" for the other cars and tend to always check and double check the other cars are stationary......
Me - I never trust anyone else to do as they should, and for that reason never ever trust a green light - never mind an amber one, perhaps that's why I have 2x6 years NCB's and 0 points... (eeekk - that's tempting fate

Now this may be a surprise to some of you but i do actually agree with red light cameras.
They do serve a very valid purpose.
The problem with making them measure speeds while the intersection is open (green light) is that it tends to erode its validity for safety.
Itd just be seen as another money making device.
Thatd be a shame, they do a good job in the red light usage.
