Just been getting back into biking- doing about 30 mins an evening all off-road.
Anyhoo, it being my old bike from a few years back (Jamis Durango- not bad IMHO) it has some kinks to iron out- the main one being that I can't get into the top ring on the front gearset so I have no really tough gear for downhill stretches but nevertheless today I managed 30.7mph according to the computer and can almost hit 30 on a level smooth bit of tarmac near my house.
Now with the gearset available and once I feel a bit more at home back in the saddle I reckon I can easily best that by some way- but, just out of curiousity, how fast have you guys managed?

I have never had a computer but friends riding with me have.
You will be doing very well to better 30mph on flat tarmac for any length of time.
Downhill you should spin out at about 40mph. If you really want speed then get yourself to North Yorkshire and follow the old railway that goes from Rosedale to the west. At the west end there is an incline which unfortunately (actually probably fortunately!) has a gate half way down. On the lower section 60mph is possible, off road, its fun!

a few years ago me and my mate where 16 and we went down a massive hill in our town
reach 52mph! where overtaking cars as it was only a 30! when we look back now it was stupid no helments etc just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt

Haha same, just ragging it, on the most unsuitable bikes with hardly any brakes with the little speedos on going down this massive hill that was a 40mph reaching about 50ish! was fun though

I was trying to explain to someone (he was just taking his CBT for motorcycling) the other day that if he wanted a real buzz then get a racer and find yourself a big hill. I used to get my Fireblade up to around the 185mph mark (obviously on a track), but even that doesn’t compare to flying down a hill on a cycle, with no helmet, thinking your wheels are going to fall off, brakes squealing to buggary and waiting for a fly or bit of gravel to partially blind you at any second.
Oh and I have no idea how fast ive been on a bicycle, I don’t think I’d want to know.

Sean Yates, one time top pro on the continent was rated the best descender in the peloton. He was clocked doing 100kph on one occasion. Completely bonkers!
I remember reading that when he was working for one of the teams that the other riders used to dread going out for training rides if he went along, they new it would end up in some deathmatch down some crazy descent.....complete loon...
53mph on the way down from the Col de la Croix de Fer towards Barrage du Verney in the French Alps.
Also clocked up 53mph many times on Britwell hill near Watlington. 12.5%, smooth tarmac and dead straight for about a mile!

Quickest for me was 48mph whilst descending Redmans Lane near Lullingstone in Kent. What fixes the mind is the blind, unsighted turning for Castle Farm Road about 3/4 of the way down the hill.

I know it well

Top speed for me on a geared bike was 53mph down a hill in Bristol
On fixed it depends on the size gear I am riding but highest pedalling rpm has been 198 at 40mph on a 68" gear down Speedgate Hill

Followed a friend down Limeburn Hill, towards Chew Magna for them that knows, at 53mph. Have gone down that hill fast enough to be able to freewheel almost to the crossroads with Winford Road - I guess you need to know the hill to appreciate it.
And used to regularly run my old analogue speedo past the 55mph end-of-speedo mark going down the A38 past the Fox and Goose just down from Bristol Airport. Without a helmet. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
