Just had an email to say that the 2007 applications are open for 2007 Formula Woman www.formulawoman.com/newsletter/sept-nletter.html

Anyone else going to have a go?

I entered this last year, & had an assessment date given etc.. But in the end I decided against it!! Think it was the idea of a fitness test that put me off. hehe

Best of luck to all the fellow PH chicks, who have the guts to get out there & give it a go.clap

Just remember that, if you get through, you'll be expect to find sponsorship. It is not the freebie that a lot of people think it is.

If any of you ladies are thinking of going in for this for the first time, you may want to speak to my missus first. They are a bunch of con merchants, end of.

Yeah, I saw that you need to get sponsorship which is fair enough - things are never free in motorsport. I have also seen a few people say its a con.. why is that? Is it because you have to find the sponsorship?

no not really! first off you have to pay fee's to enter - you may or may not get through this stage, its like a very expensive lottery ticket.

If you get through you will be notified that there is the option of having some "tuition" before the event. The "tuition" is advertised as an hour course in how to control the car yadda yadda yadda. Cost close to £100.

If you don't take the "option" of "tuition" - you WILL NOT get through.

If you do take the "tuition" what you actually get is a novice driver (often failed contestant from a previous year) with relatively no experience take you for 4 - yes 4 whole laps of a circuit... sorry did I say circuit, I meant a small circle... that will teach you virtually nothing. The tutor told my wife to do several things that seemed both alien and dangerous to her, which she questioned but was assured that she'd be marked down if she differed. In the real session she did as tutored... only to be halted by the instructor and reprimanded for being dangerous!!!!!!!!!!

You are also invited to join the "club" - which involves handing over a reasonable sum of cash, for which you get a nice card that says you are a member. Nothing else, just a nice card.

There are lots of other reasons, can't remember all the details but just about every tier of it stinks. Suffice to say that the wife has witnessed it first hand twice, and several "proper" female racers we've spoken to since have all concured that if you want to get into racing, this is something to run away from, not toward.

If you want to go for a fun day out - pay for a track day or something at Silverstone - it'll probably end up costing you less and you'll get more out of it.

Thanks for that Davi. Ive heard positive and negative things about it. I do know it will cost me ££ and i think its £140 to join the club if you get to the last 100 or something. I didnt know about paying for tuition from novices.

It hasnt put me off tho and I am going to give it a go though and see for myself and if I feel at any time things are getting out of hand, will re-assess the situation. At the very least I get an assessment day which will be a good day out.

no worries. The wife got into the last 100 first time round, got knocked out at the next stage. Good luck, I'd suggest if you go into it, go with the view that it will just be a laugh and nothing more and you'll enjoy it a lot more.

oh - and if you aren't very fit, start training now - the amount of girls getting very embarressed and upset while throwing up beside the fitness area was quite amusing

Never understood the point of this - surely the ladies want to be competing on equal terms. You win it but means not alot when you get out into the real panel bashing world of motorsport. I am all for the ladies doing it but a series just for them is just some much marketing crap.

Once you have say competed and won a few races it will surely then be easier to get a drive in more male dominated races. I understand a couple of previous Formula Women racers are indeed racing with men and doing very well.

Get A DRIVE???? All the people in F3 and onwards have stack of cash, usually from daddy or connections.

(The Best driver in the world likely as not are taxi drivers in bogata or russia tht will never sit in a singel seater. Guys in F1 are the best just cos of seat time and circumstances).

Er just go and buy a car and race it! Club Racing (some of it is better than the tedium of F1).

If you want a career out of it maybe not a bad way to go though.

WELCOME GIRLS TO THE WORLD OF MOTOR RACING:

I won't comment on Formula Woman, however, I have been racing for 15 years at Club level (and once started also was asked to become an ARDS instructor).

Get out there and spend £2k or less on a Maestro / Peugeot 205 / Fiesta - ready prepared to race at this price - and come and join the Tin Tops with the Classic Sports Car Club. The races are 40-minutes with a pit-stop so you can share the drive / costs etc.

It's not rocket science and we have "mixed grids" - as in several girls beating the guys! Come on and join in - have a track day with Calum at Gold Track and get some tuition, then make a start! Don't be scared, there's always a first time - don't put it off!

As for fitness, Fit Moi? I think not! Doing some cardio work does help, especially in longer races, but you don;t need anything more than the tests your GP will carry out as part of themedical you need to get your licence.

There are a couple of other routes - the Caterham Academy (altho a little more expensive than the above) but you get good tuiotion and move up from autotests through sprinting to racing including getting your ARDS licence;

The Porsche Speed Campionship - my bro' bought a 944 for £2k, ready prepped again; sprints all over the UK sharing with his mate; then progress to the Porsche 924/944 championship racing

Come On Girls - like the man said!

Oh - and join the British Women Racing Drivers Club - we fielded a team at the Birkett Relay Race (6 hours) with a BMW 5 series, my Lancia Beta, a Jag XJS, a Ginetta and a Ford Fiesta - brilliant fun!

Have a look at the BWRDC website
