Is there a way to assign a link type to open a specific program?

For example, as standard, when you click on anything beginning http:// it opens IE (or your default browser) and when you click on anything beginning mailto:// it opens your default mail program.

I want to have a link of type sip:// that when clicked on, opens my VoIP client program. Anyone know how?

Cheers.

It'll be in the Windows Registry somewhere, try searching for 'mailto:' and see what it throws up.

There is some stuff in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to do with this stuff. But in the registry stuff that is mapping CLASSES is oftten very convoluted.

Google will probably help.

You need to setup a MIME type as I remember.

In Explorer, just select tools -> folder options -> file types then add the one you want.

If you're the one writing the page, you could script it? Doesn't solve the general problem though.

I'm not completely certain, but I think the protocol associations will be provided by the browser, and the underlying OS only provides the file suffix associations. As a slight wrinkle, IE seems to honour the file suffix associations too, even if you explicitly use IE to open a document it will delegate it to another application based on the ftype association.

Erm, that'll be me then. It'll teach me to half read a topic.

How about this instead? I've not tried it, but it's worth looking at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/def
