Over heating

I've had some strange 'blips' on the temperature guage in recent months, but they've been very infrequent, and I thought just a guage problem. Basically, the guage would jump from normal (90) up to max (120) instantly, stay like that for a minute or so, then return to normal.

Last weekend though, I definitely had an overheating problem. The guage started creeping from 90-100, flicking to 120, then dropping back to normal. Oil temp was high (100) for 'normal' driving, so it was definitely hot. I limped home having administered some Evian en route to discover coolant on the front tray in ther rad area. I suspect that might be a symptom of a very pressurised system rather than cause though.

Anyone know how the temperature regulation works on a 400, as I'm pretty sure it must be a naff thermostat/sensor somewhere.

It could be the sensor mate, I've had one go.
On the 2.5 its on the driver's side at the front, where the elbow comes out of the rad.
It might be worth checking all the connections around the elbow pipes on the rad as they leak occasionally.

Assuming from your handle that you have an M400, then this is definitely not normal. The guage is designed to flick to 120 when there is a problem, and if you see that, then you definitely have a probelm. Having water in the front rad area is also not good. It should never leak in that area no matter what the pressure. Get to your nearest/favourite dealer/service agent and get the cooling system checked out.

Having just looked at your profile, perhaps I'll come over to you. I'm in West London, but not sure it will go that far! May be a tedious journey.
Anyway, off on hols for a few days tomorrow, so no point in worrying at the moment!
and yes....it's a 400.

I had the problem in my 3R. In the end I needed to change the front cat and the radiator. Not cheap but it curred the problem.
