I am confused, My budget pc can run pc3200 ram but has only been running 756mb of pc2700.

I just replaced that with 1 gig of pc3200 and my performance according to 3D mark has dropped!

I have a 256mb nvidia 6600 if that makes any difference.

Any suggestions?

did you have multiple sticks before?

Presumably with 768 you had a 512 and a 256?

iirc 3dmark had 'issues' with large amounts of ram which would cause it to report poor scores. this was a 3dMark bug as opposed to worsened system performance.

Yes, i had a 256mb stick at pc3200 and a 512 stick at pc2700 so i assume it was all running at the lower speed of 2700.

I am posting from a laptop, not the PC btw.

adited to add...is it all versions of 3d mark that have this problem?

I think what Plotloss is getting at is that dual channel motherboards work best when they've got at least 2 sticks of memory installed, then they can make use of both channels If you've gone down to a single stick of memory that could be why its got slower.

OK, i have run the memtest thing and all is fine apparently. I have upgraded my AGP drivers from my motherboard website and my test results are the same.

Having loaded a few games up, my system is running better, just not according to 3dmark...

thanks for your time all.

Even if he had 1 1Gb stick it shouldn't be slower than a 512+256. As far as i'm aware you need too identical types of stick for dual channel to work ie 2x 512 or 2x 256 etc.
