Fuel Type 95 or 98???

reading the tail end of the thread on focusing headlights i noticed that a reference to using 98ron was made. According to my hand book and the sticker next to the fuel filler it says to use 95ron, which is all i have ever put in. Do you get any more power or any other advantage from using 98? when i got the car i expected it to use 98 and was surprised to note the recommendation of 95.

RR's have a switch for 95/98, otherwise it should be 98 always.

eh I thought they all had 98 stickers.

I only EVER run mine on 98. Low engine speed high load knock is a BIG problem on the AJP8.

I now use either Tesco 99 or Shell V-power also 99ron

I always use 98 or above. But once or twice in emergencies i have put 95 in. No real difference to performance really, and i don't think it does any damage to the engine

I always use Tesco Super 99...... Tried BP Ultimate once, which is 97RON and my Cerb didn't spit flames anywhere near as much.

i run it on 95 but with 97/98 it runs like a pig ??

I would suggest you run it on 97-98+ it is much better for you engine than 95, much less chance of taking out a piston, spark plug etc due to det.

its a 1996 4.2 ??? i'll give it a go what about tesco 99
also i though the R/R switch was to allow for higher octane not to go lower ??
why would you need to switch to 95 if your running on 98 ???

right just checked the manual and page 40 says 98 ron so there you go

The Tesco 99 gives loads more Pops n Bangs than Shell Optimax (sorry its called 'V Power' now isnt it). I'e been told by my Indie Servicer that its only worth using the Shell V Power/Optimax only every 3rd fill up, as it has a lot of Engine cleaning detergents in it, and once every 3rd fill is all thats needed.

thanks every body for your input, i read the posts this morning and thought i must have miss-read the sticker and the manual. Just been and checked and i am not going mad, there are two stikers next to the filler cap, one is green and says unleaded the other is a warning sticker saying use 95 octane only with a big ! next to it.
Just to be sure i dug out my manual and on page 66 it says the recommended fuel is 95 RON for 4.2,4.5 and speed 6's. it does go on to say that for track days use 98 Ron for high performance. My car is 2003, is this any different and as such my be better on 95?

ditto, although i've have used the RR button with 95 when i couldn't find the 99ron.
the difference in power is noticable. mine does not like the BP ultimate stuff, its a lot quieter on this, tesco fuel it spits flames everywhere.
they've done tests on 5th gear and an indipendant test on PH.
i believe 95 doesn't do damage.

The fuel won't but it is totally dependant on the engine. I run engines day in day out on 95-98-100 fuel and know exactly what too much ign advance on 95 fuel does. I personnaly only ever run 95 in my work hack and if there is NO other alternative.

I've just been looking at the owners manual that came with my car.

On page 61 it says the TVR recommended fuel for all it's engine ranges for the Cerbs is the 95.

Mines under the section on the catalytic convertor. The owners handbook frequently mentions unleaded but the cat section says in "the engine is designed to run on 98 (RON) octane (super green) unleaded"

the manuals changed quite a bit across the range, of the 3 I owned - all were slight differences, and depending on TVR's partners at the time, they would recommend those oils - tires etc etc, my first said 95RON the subsequent have said 98RON, Dom at TVR Power said there's not much difference between 95/97, I disagree, mine runs a lot smoother, seems more responsive and louder on higher octane Tesco99/V-power99. I’ve been told so many conflicting stories by TVR dealers and the factory itself. I’ve found the best way is to listen to Indies, offering a wealth of experience, also your own experience. Most of the problems and solutions have been passed down from owner to owner, each has their own techniques, and each car is very different to another. I’ve driven about 15 Cerberas, and every one of them was different. So if yours runs fine on 95 keep it that way.

Mine says only use 95 at the petrol tank... its a Red Rose for god sake. Mind you its better than the Diesel somebody not to be mentioned tried to put in.
