Cost of 12K service
Discussion
Hi Guys, I had my T350 6K service in July at a TVR main agent. I was a little surprised when the service manager told me that the next service, i.e. 12K would cost the princely sum of £1400, this is including the virtually obligatory tappet adjustment! I've checked a number of other places and just wonder if anyone has managed to get it done for less than £1K at a TVR main agent. I have to have a main agent service, as the car is only just 14months into it's 3 year factory warranty. Thanks for any responses.

Yes, I can appreciate that many of the independent TVR people are significantly cheaper than the dealer network. Apparently, due to some EU ruling, it is illegal for any car manufacturer to void a warranty on a car where the servicing has been done by an independent from outside the dealer network, provided the independent has used the manufacturers service schedule and parts. Personally, my balls are not big enough to challenge this, so I'll be paying main dealer rates for the foreseeable future! Does loyalty come into it? I would like to think that if you build a relationship with a dealer, you may get a few friendly warnings of work needed or invites to launches etc, but IMHO, value for money counts for a great deal and I would much rather pay a reasonable price and miss out on the courtesy cars and fresh coffee, than be royally spanked every service time! Thanks for all responses,

Agreed but look at it at another angle. How would the dealer network survive if everbody went indi. They dont make much out of selling ?
Yes, I know what you are saying, I wouldn't want the dealer network to collapse as I think they are vital for our cars. However, I would appreciate a bit more consistency over the pricing of servicing and/or maintenance as I think that a range of £1400 - £800 for a 12K service is quite extreme. I drive a "boring" hatchback to and from work and accept that, wherever I go in the U.K. the cost of servicing it is going to be pretty much the same wherever I get it serviced. Why can't TVR be the same and why should we show loyalty to TVR dealers who are charging top prices? Should market forces not apply?
It will be significantly cheaper for me to book my car in at, for example, David Hendry's and pay either the transport or even book in at a B&B for a couple days, still saving £400-£500 over the cost at my local TVR dealer! I would really like to continue using my local dealer, but a saving of that amount would go a considerable way to paying for my next service or towards the emergency maintenance fund.

Spot on - see my post here about the same thing www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=300434&f=7&h=0
Thanks TurboTomato, I was away during August so missed your original post. I know that the TVRCC has tried to negotiate a 10% sevicing discount but, the last time I checked, not all TVR main dealers had signed up for it and my local dealer informed me that they only gave the discount on parts NOT labour, which although any discount is welcome, obviously is only a "drop in the water" compared to the cost of labour. I wish I had a definitive answer but at the moment, I'm glad I've got a few months before my next service so that I can investigate further and shop around. Regards,
