Why are 456's so cheap? They're a gorgeous looking car.

Are the two seats in the rear usable?

What are the running costs like on these? Same as a 355 or cheaper?

Like the 928 before it, this masterpiece seems to have evolved into the sort of (perhaps overly sober) Ferrari that Ferrari owners didn't require.

From an era which gave us the equally sublime aesthete, the 355, the grace of the GT is simply unmatched, probably my preferred Pininfarina silhouette of all, I just adore the damn thing.

All the usual horror stories abound but keep it's book stamped, avoid peasantry dancing on the bonnet and you'll be fine, well 928 service bill-esque fine, i.e heavy duty German, not Ford, service receipts...at least that's what my learned chum Kevin tells me.

For quite a few geezers, these cars are now genuinely affordable ito an aspirational purchase (£30-£50k) and whilst 550s will apparently run rings round 'em, it hardly seems the point.

Jag's 'gorgeous' may make me puke but Fez's 456 makes 'timeless elegance' seem like legitimate euology.

This is the defintive car for any self respecting Kirstan Scott Thomas sniffer .

So based upon an annual mileage of say 6k - what would running costs be of a 35k car with 40k already on the clock?

They are gorgeous. I looked at a Rosso car at Cars International at Canary Wharf.

£170k new yikes

It was exceptional and up at £55k. The only problem was the risk of massive (and I mean MASSIVE bills) and a warranty with a £500 claim limit.... hehe Apparently a new engine comes in at about £60k........!!!!

Hmm, I heard £68k ... plus a few grand for the rear suspension ... so make damn sure there are no leaks from the shockers.

Beautiful car that I did consider not so long ago ... but I just can't afford the risk of a potentially crippling bill

Why all the concern about the engine?

Ferrari V12's are extremely strong. There are also the usual stories about the auto gearboxes going pop and a resulting £40K bill for a new one but I have never heard of any imploding.

Taken my fathers 456 to VMAX a few times and it handled lots of full bore standing starts without a wimper. Felt great all day.

Also done around 3000 miles around Europe in 8 days and it didnt miss a beat.

Costs can be big though. The old mans has gone in today for a service and to have the drivers side door seal replaced. The door seals is £500 each.

Probably need to budget about £3-4K servicing per year assuming nothing goes wrong.

The only problem has been a split radiator hose (a £6 part) which was about £700 in labour to change as it was under the inlet manifold which had to be taken off completely to change it.

Other expensive things are the electric windows which can fail so make sure you get them checked.

And dont crumple the bonnet. A replacement is £8K eek

Brilliant cars though. Get one.
