I thought this was illegal. However, we have just taken delivery of some new armoured Mercedes Sprinters that allow the one man crew to press a button on the dash that permits them to take the keys out of the ignition but keeps the engine running (to allow the aircon to keep going)and then they can get off the vehicle. Effectively this is leaving a vehicle with the engine running in neutral and no one aboard. I have no idea if it engages some sort of proplock as a safety back up against brake failure.

To disable this function, a quick dab on the footbrake disables it. It's only fitted to the tiptronic semi auto box vans.

Your thoughts?

I remember Madcop mentioning that this was fitted to Police cars, so I guess it is not that illegal.

So if someone gets in to try and drive away, does it stall or something?

Yeah I remember police cars have them (is it KRS - keyless running system?) so that all the lights flashing and wot-not doesn't run the battery down.

can't you get turbo timers to allow your turbo to cool when you park up?
leaves the engine running for a set period

Generally when quitting a vehicle and unless than attended by a person licensed to drive, then the engine should be stopped and parking brake applied.

Exceptions to this rule of switching off do include emergency service vehicles, or

in respect of a vehicle in such position and condition not likely to endanger persons or property and engaged in an operation which requires engine to be used to drive machinery in or on the vehicle and used for other than driving, or,
to maintain power of the batteryt to drive such machinery

So DVD, a Securicor armoured van would fall into this category? In view of the amount of security devices fitted, i know that if the engine is not running for any length of time the batteries discharge quite quickly (within half an hour). Certainly in the time it can take to service a busy high street bank.

Tony H - believe me, you won't be able to get on board! You can try, but there'll be crowd gathered and watching you by the time you even make a scratch! hehe

Could you argue that aircon and radio are 'machinery in or on the vehicle'? Seems a bit tenuous to me.

I would guess they don't count, but the associated security devices on our vans would.

Would have thought a Securicor vehicle would have security devices fitted that relied on lecky to activate/maintain?.

......and what about the poor burgher locked in the back compartment. You want to fry him? Somehow Security guard en croute does not appeal to me.

Without asking you to give away any trade secrets, WTF do you have on your vans that can not beserviced by a second 'domestic' battery with split charging system. As on boats, motorhomes, dare I say the c word, oh go on then caravans. West Yorks plod horse boxes used to have a problem with flattening 'domestic' batteries running the Eberspacher but there was a way round that.

Anyway the principle is that you run the kit off a second deep discharge battery leaving the vehicle battery for starting the engine etc.

Must be some serious kit in there if a proper set up can't handle it.

The new Mercs have two batteries, a set up just as you say and yes they do have some serious shit on them! The vans actually kill the leisure battery every six months and they have to be replaced. The Transits you see going around have three batteries on them, two under the bonnet and one in the back. Believe me there's more to these vans these days than a series of mechanical locks and bullet proof glass (although we still have that too). Actually, next time you can, have a look at the 'ordinary' windscreen on one of our vans. To get some idea of how thick it is, note how far 'behind' the glass the tax disc is.

My car has one, although I think it is aftermarket. I usually stay with the car until the engine has stopped as I don't want some bugger nicking it.
