I need to move from USB to USB2 to speed up file transfers from my camera.

On recommendation from the guy who built my PC, I bought a Safecom SU2V-P5 5-port USB2 Controller PCI card from Ebuyer and fitted it. Fine, except that the mini-CD that came with it doesn't seem to be XP-safe and the Wizard can't find anything on the internet.

To be precise, when I let it install from the CD I got a warning saying: ' VIA PCI to USB Universal Host Controller has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP'. (This despite the packaging having a Windows XP logo on it).

The first time, I chose 'continue anyway' and my PC promptly threw up a blue screen full of large white text. Rebooting yielded the same. Then a black screen. So I removed the card and turned on again, and clever old XP put itself back together again.

The card is now fitted but I can't install the software and of course none of the new ports are working, as witnessed by Device Manager.

Sooo - anyone know where I can get drivers from?

WinXP with SP2 installed should know what the little fella is even if it doesn't have the drivers to give it the correct name (i.e. 'eXtremeTech USB2 PCI card' instead of 'unknown VIA USB2 host bridge').

Try bolting on something you know is USB2 to one of the ports on the card... XP will do one of the following:

1. Ignore it, means yes you do need the drivers.
2. Accept the device and make it work, but display a "this device could go faster" bubble.
3. Accept the device and say nothing other than "new hardware installed ok".

If #3 happens then try moving data between the computer and the device, it should be a lot faster.

Just plugged in my Nikon D200...

XP does none of the above! In fact it does nothing at all. The shortcut doesn't work and as mentioned above, System Manager has a nice yellow exclamation mark over all 5 ports...

Well I suppose if the drivers were half installed then with the card in it could cause the system to become unstable in weird and wonderful ways. Before using the drivers from that website, I'd poke around that mini-CD and see if their is an uninstall program... it might be able to get the corrupted cruft off the system.

Edit:

Just incase its your CD causing problems, poking around their website I found a link to the latest drivers. Seems to be a generic one for all their USB products.

This may be the problem:

'2.0 System Requirement

This setup program will install the driver for VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller. Before the setup program starts running, please make sure the using computer has an IBM PC-compatible system.
VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller driver package can be operated under following operating systems:

Operating System
Windows98
Windows98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium
Windows 2000
Windows XP SP1'

Despite being dated 2006, the software makes no mention of SP2...

You can but then you often get the above blue screens of death . What does device manager say about the card? If it's partly installed it'll show up in there and a right click on it should give you an uninstall option, try that and reboot. then let xp use it's inbuilt drivers.

No I think I googled the name of the card to get more info. In the end I swapped it for an NEC chipset based card as there were know compatibilty issues between the USB card and some other old hardware in my system.

You may be right. Anyway, with the help of an hour-long call to my Microsoft-trained IT bod, we did a System Restore, then went to the card maker's website safecom.cn and found a newer driver - then AVG went off - two exes had W32/Parite viruses in! Deleted those files, eventually installed what we wanted and Device Manager is happy...

Haven't tested the ports yet, but here's hoping...

Only hiccup is that Firefox still shuts down every 5 mins, so am using IE for this!

Funnily enough have been looking at the same problem myself today - the problem seems to be that the drivers on the disk (mine is a four port USB 2.0 PCI card with chipset from via) doesn't support USB 2.0 properly.

if you go to

www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1200&SubCatID=122

you will see a windows Xp USB 2.0 driver, just download that and then run the setup program and hey presto USB ports become USB 2.0 compliant.

The dead giveaway, is that when first installed with the disk, when you plug a USB 2.0 device like a memory stick, windows comes up saying this device would work better in a hi-speed device, even though in control panel, system, USB - its shown as an enhanced USB controller.

Bizarre really, but found this after many days of searching,it seems only VIA chipsets have the problem.

No good - it worked a bit then gave me tthree blue screens in quick succession.

Can anyone say what USB2 card is OK with an Asus A7N266 mobo?

Must go before it crashes again!

scratchchin Was your system ok before this card was fitted? If it was is your PSU up to running another PCI card. I know it's a long shot but it's worth considering.

It was a thought we had yesterday; apparently it may be that some PCI slots get more power than others...

We tried another System Restore only to find that nearly all the SR points had vanished

However the Viarun site looks good so when I feel brave enough I'll try a driver from there!

Get the chipset drivers for that motherboard, they normally contain usb drivers amongst other things. At a guess you'll have an intel chipset if its a laptop, they are most common.

It's an Asus A7N266 mobo with AMD Athlon 1800+ and nVidia N-force 420 chipset, circa 2002, running XP SP2. The driver from the card maker was duff, so I don't know what's best, the driver from VIA who make the chip on the card (VT6212L), which seems logical, or Asus as you suggest... confused

I used the earliest remaining System Restore point of about 7pm last night and so far (half an hour) it's stable

The motherboard driver is probably the best starting point, check asus's website first to see if they have a driver for that motherboard. Failling that go for the nforce drivers.
