Anyone been to Portugal?

Hi all,
Its been a good day! (well one out of the 365 has to be) My company has been awarded a 1 - 2 year contract in Lisbon so I am moving again as soon as I am finished here in autobahn land.
I have never been there before, can anyone tell me what its like? Nightlife? Car theft

Been to Porto, not Lisbon. But beware, the drivers are asses at the best of times.
I think Lisbon is supposedly better than Porto, as parts of Porto are pretty low rent. Nice people, but the Brazilians version of the language is a lot sexier and less annoying.
Bare in mind that Spain is not as advanced as UK or Germany, and I'd say Portugal is about 10-15 years behind them, from what I saw.

Wnen there - make sure you visit the Port ("Oporto") making region. The scenery is fabulous and the port is, of course, rather good.
They wall the hillsides to produce tiny thin terraces on which to plant the vines. The effect looks like someone drew the contour lines from the map on the actual ground! Amazing.

I have been to Portugal many times and really like the place. Its like Spain without the cockyness (sorry to all those Spaniards out there - but it is the only comparison that I can make!). However, it is actually very different to Spain so dont assume anything.
Worst drivers in Europe (officially) and they are somewhat crazy at the best of times. However, the place is loverly and I am sure that you will enjoy it. The cities are great if a little strange and the locals friendly....

P.S. If you do go then suggest that you take up Golf - the place is covered with bloody golf courses!

Good call - Lisbon is a beautiful city - cobbled roads and hills etc.
Along the coast you have Estoril - Europe's largest Casino and the leftovers of the F1 circuit that's in need of TLC! Still used for testing and bikes but the piles of rubbish and debris means F1 is gone until they sort it.)
Lovely beaches and great surf as the Atlantic smacks into the shoreline.

I spent 3 months working in Lisbon last year and really like the city. There has been a lot of money spent developing hotels and the dock area so you can find all the usual types of establishments. City itself is very quaint with loads of nice resturants and wine as cheap as anything. nightclubs, strip joints (apparently - Elephanto Branco, excuse my spelling), cocktail bars. Personally I avoid travelling if possible but found myself very at home there.
Rooftop bar in the Cheriton(sp) hotel is a must see at night too.
Yes, there are areas where drugs were on offer/in use but no worse than anywhere else.
Nice place , prices shot up in the Hotels when they converted to the euro - but I think its still cheap compared to the rest of West Europe.

I lived in Porto for a Summer a few years back. The roads are absolutely terrible, everybody drives like maniacs (often half cut) and if you live anywhere on the coast get a good umbrella. Having said that the food is good and cheap, the wine an undiscovered treat (the Sogrape Alentejo is a particular favourite at the moment and a lot of people speak english, especially arround Porto. Lisbon has a great nightlife mostly up in the Bairo Alto (take a funicular), the bars never close. Porto, Coimbra Guarda, and Cascais are the most interesting 'cities' but the countryside, especially in the north, is absolutely lovely. Just don't eat anything labeled 'Tras-os-Montes', it means from behind the mountains and is usually garnished with a pigs ear.
