Does anyone know if the liners are different between the 1996 4.2 engines and the later engines (with the more substantial crank?).

Also does anyone know how much a set of liners for a 4.5 and a couple of headgaskets would be?

The rebuild after the snapped crank starts here.

Have a chat to Paul at Austec Racing - 01293 531080. Since you're close to them you can pop down there and have a chat, they're open Saturday morning, but it's best to check it Paul will be in. There's also their annual open day on Sunday, when he'll definitely be around.

Steve.

Hi James, did you get the block crack tested then? Ash (Phoenix) was talking about cryogenic treatment, sounded quite interesting, is that what you did in the end?

As a rough guess looking on Powers website, liners are £180, and head gaskets are £125 each for copper. You might have to get the block line bored when the new liners are as the may be off centre when they are put in to line them up, and if you do this then the overall bore size will be bigger, so this means new pistons and rings £800 for pistons, and £250 for gapless rings and line bore £700 for new crank and centred liners.

so
Liners £180
Head gaskets £250
Pistons £800
Rings £250
Line bore 700

Vat on the above too.

Depends if you want to slap the engine back together and move on, or put it back together correctly and keep it.

If you're not planning on boring the block out to fit the bigger 4.5 pistons ( the crank stroke is the same for both engines) then the only thing to check for is does the new (fatter) crank clear the bottom of your old liner. Also if you've any damage etc ....

Don't forget to fit a new timing chain while you're there

Best of luck with it

Cheers Matt,

I noticed that the old liners didnt fit the new crank. I am looking at boring it to 4.5 and dropping the 4.5 pistons and rods into it. Will the 4.5 rods fit the later 4.2 crank?

May have to get it remapped at the end of this.

Your build starts here???

Good luck, these things always take a LOT longer than you anticipated...

I'd recommend just picking up a used 4.5 running engine.... similar costs to a full rebuild (probably) and make life hell of a lot easier...

Also, bang up some pics of all the damaged internals.... scratchchin

Would love to take photos. Will do once I work it out. I have a broken piston and a bit of crank (just the front end to the first main bearing journal) on my desk at work as expensive paperweights.

Hope the block doesn't turn out to be cracked or I will have an expensive coffee table.
