Moving to Basingstoke

I am facing forced but funded relocation to Basingstoke in the very near future but don't want to give up the option of commuting back to London. Any pointers on nice country villages where I can get a 4 bed for around 500K and be no more than 30 mins from Basingstoke and 1 hour from London.

I've done the multimap railtrack thing and now need a little bit of local knowledge.

At that price in that area I'd go for Hartley Wintney or Odiham.

I live in Cold Ash (ne of newbury) which is nice, has a good pub and 30 mins from Basingstoke. You can get to london in an hour from here as in get to paddington but it's always the tube journey that increases the time.

Personally I would look at one of the villages, Rotherwick, Upton Grey etc or Cliddesden, Candovers for nearer Basingstoke. Depends how close you want to be to a train station.

Runway - presumably for an aircraft - what type?

Blackbushe - on A30 between Camberley and Hartley Wintney.
Popham - grass strip only. Alongside A303 near Micheldever.
Farnborough - now a civil biz jet airport.

Thanks for the info, I have to confess I was pulling legs on living that far away. Although a small helicopter is very appealing.

I just assumed anyone in the market for a £500k house probably owned at least a light twin.

Mapel Durwell is a nice place, very close by. Good pub, lots of money and a regular visit for Hants PH meets from what I read. (Must get a long this spring!)

Thanks, I'll be along to the Hants meeting as soon as I move. I went on the Vernham Dean trip last summer and some of the villages that way looked lovely. Gonna be commuting on a Fireblade so 30 mins might stretch that far, if so I'll go looking that way too.

Lasham, that's the place, about 5 miles south of Basingstoke and big enough to land a commercial jet in. Freddie Laker had his "SkyTrain" planes stored there some years ago. Rich...

Dan Air had their maintenance operation there, so there were always loads of planes around. Believe it is now owned by the Glider Club

No, in my youth I used to frequent a bikers pub in Lasham village, the easiest way to get there from Basingstoke was across the airfield. But it did have the added danger that occasionally you had to dodge a plane or two.

Well. Welcome to Basingstoke!

With a 500K budget the world will be your oyster. Or, at least, Basingstoke and its environs...

There are a wealth of villages around the town that have pretty picturesque bits. Mapledurwell, as mentioned, is lovely. Rotherwick and Mattingly are nice. There were some other places we looked at that might be useful.

Now here's the crappy bit of advice. Lovely village living is not a problem on your budget...but it can be a slog getting into the town. Travelling into Basingstoke station takes longer than you think. If you commute to London (as my wife does) then how close you are to the station is a big contributer to quality of life. (Time's a wastin' as they say...)

Areas which have nice bits actually IN Basingstoke which are close to the station are Lychpit (where I used to live) and Chineham. Old Basing has some lovely parts but is a little further out.

Basingstoke used to have a range of very fast roads into and out of the centre. The local council have progressively reduced these limits to the point where it is beginning to be a slow journey across town. Watch out for this effect wherever you choose to live. What is a quick journey now may be irritatingly slow in just a few years time....and a problem for a London commute.

We have moved to Kempshott and the missus has a drag of a journey along 30mph roads...

Of course..whilst you are NOT commuting into London it is possible to live in the most gorgeous spots - and so what if it takes a while to get into the centre.
