Fun to Drive, Easily insureable car for <16k?

My brother is looking into chopping in his Paxo VTR for something with a bit more poke and more fun to drive - preferably rear or 4 wheel drive.

The snag is he is 21, with no no-claims and 1 at fault accident last year. He needs something easy to insure, that will be reliable and well built (so nothing french - he's totally sick of the Paxo's crap build quality). He's also a bit of a badge snob, so preferably a make with a bit of either snob factor or motorsport heritage.

Any Ideas?

Subaru Forester Turbo - goes like stink (not quite as quick as the Impreza) but tons cheaper to insure (they don't appeal to theiving scum, apparently)

Not the fastest thing in the world but de-badged, and big wheeled should fit the badge snob label and it's not going to be too scary to insure

Why doesn't he spend say £14k on a car and add a couple of grand to the insurance? Should open the options up a bit.

Exactly, or even spend 8k on something, and have the insurance for a few years.

Come and see me at work, I will do a brand new Hyundai coupe 2.0SE including 3 years parts & labour servicing and a 5 year warranty for £16000 exactly.

Insurance is not steep, yes you don't have a "badge" but you do have a cracking NEW car with leather, air, cruise control etc and I'll chuck in a year's tax.

Just a thought....

He wants a reliable car - have suggested a TVR S several times, but he's put off by the soft top (for winter) and fears over reliability, however unfounded.
He's putting a fair bit of it on finance, and doesn't really want ot piss away 3K a year on insurance.

I'll have a chat with him about the Hyundai coupe chris, sounds like a good idea. (I'll check out a few quotes first though )

Not rear wheel drive.
BUT brand new, got to be better tham a hyundai image wise

15k list on the road(negotiate as well).
leaves a grand for insurance (enough?)
4% apr pcp deal this month only

Seat Leon Cupra(cheaper and better image than the equivalent golf.

At the risk of getting shot down....

What about a new MINI cooper. Great fun to drive, suprisingly cheap insurance (looowww group) great residuals and excellent reliability.

Mrs Dan has had one for a little over a year and it's brilliant.

...just a thought, I'll get me coat
