Pointless, in my modern limited and unappreciative opinion.

I have justifications for this but Leica lovers will never be convinced, so why bother ?

Someone tell me what the real world benefits of a rangefinder are over a camera with a modern AF system.

Without one, purists wouldnt be able to relive their past over and over in the present.

In be interested to see whether anyone carrying one within half a mile of an airport terminal would be shot on the spot.

I appreciate its genius. Doesnt mean I want one though Must say I would like to make my own pinhole camera one day And the day I start carrying it around with me everywhere is the day you can consider your words marked

Looks very interesting I'll be interested to know its performance compared to its film brethren.

The big benefit of a rangefinder over an SLR is that there is no mirror slapping about and causing vibrations, this means your photos will be noticeably sharper - you can hand-hold at slower shutter speeds. Lenses can also be more compact for their focal length which makes them lighter. Your view of the subject doesn't disappear while taking the shot either. Rangefinders tend to be smaller, quieter and more discreet. Trouble is you pretty much need a different viewfinder for each lens you use and long telephoto or macro lenses are impractial. Horses for courses.

If you mean image quality, the verdict is still out, but I can tell you if it's as good as the DMR (and being a year newer, better software, newer chip it should be) it will easily outgun 35mm film. In fact, just like it's bigger brother it will rival a D2X and 1DSII. Maybe not quite in terms of ultimate resolution with 1DS, but it will beat them both with better colour and higher dynamic range.

I'd buy one in an instant if, magically, I was instantly able to take photo's as good as this guy: www.flickr.com/photos/tommyoshima/
