I've had a June 2004 156 JTD 2.4 for 2 years bought as a demonstrator from a franchised dealer. Large chips of the matt coating over the mirror housing have recently come off and 2 spokes on one alloy wheel are suffering from significant areas of flaking paint.

I popped in to the dealer this week to be told that these are cosmetic issues and the warranty for cosmetics only last 2 years. It is down to the dealership's discretion whether these things can be repaired without charge - it is being conidered by the warranty manager. However, the guy I was talking with told me not to have too much hope, as in his experience a very tough line is taken on cosmetics. He also told me that these are common problems on alfas.

Has anyone any tips on how to maximise my position on this? I find it unbelievable that I am driving around in a £23K 2 and bit year old car with paint peeling off the alloys and the bodywork. If the garage does not cover it I will never buy one again for sure.

Any advice appreciated.

You will be the first person ever to get the powder coated wing mirror mounts done under third year warranty if you manage it!!!

I know it's no answer, but they all do it (see many Fiats of similar aged design too).

Its a company car and theres no way I will convince the boss that we should be paying for that sort of stuff on a car that young. Its a great car overall but its small things like this that put people off the cars.

No, but the Company bought it for me and therefore they will be looking at costs such as this when it comes to replacing it. Its a great car, but in the end Company's are looking to keep fleet costs down, and this is not really acceptable for a 2 year old vehicle.

Shame, as I have had my eye on a Brera! In light blue metallic in looks fantastic imho.

Best thing then is not to tell the boss and get the matt black touch up paint out.

Oh - and avoid power washers as well!!

Right, 47k miles is well out of the matrix for wheel paint. It's only very thin, and 50k can be about right depending the where you live and the driving you do.

Update - they covered the wing mirror housing but refused to cover the paint peeling on the alloy wheel. Not a bad result I suppose. And they gave it a good wash as part of the service. Hmmm, now those Breras....
