4200 Cambiocorsa clutch wear - over last 11 months
Discussion
Maser is in for big service at moment - thought it would be a good chance to ask the main dealer for a reading of the clutch wear. Especially as I had a reading done by same dealer when I purchase car back in October 2005..... so, here goes:
Oct 2005 - 25,000 miles - clutch wear 29.79%
Sep 2006 - 39,500 miles - clutch wear 50.10%
so, that's 14,500 miles (same clutch), and 'wear' of roughly 20%. If the clutch continues to wears at the same rate (will it?), I could see (possibly) at least another 30,000 miles before forking out for a new clutch... that'd be good... (dealer did say the best one they had (on a Cambiocorsa) lasted 48,000 miles, and the worst was 12,000 miles
Some further points:
- I don't put it into neutral when slowing down to a halt (I rather like it moving through the gears)
- I don't select neutral if I'm in traffic for a while
- and I certainly haven't driven sparingly, or without spirit....
so, hopefully useful info for those interested in the clutch issue...
Cheers,
John

Hmm
Have asked for mine when it was serviced last week, they're gonna post it on as they forget to include it with the service details (hopefully they did do it!)
I do stick it in neutral on the way to a stop, I don't sit with it in gear while waiting, and don't fanny about pulling away gently (as in slipping the clutch)
We shall see! If they post anything up, hopefully egham won't have too much of an issue plugging in and giving me a readout!

sounds very encouraging. just bought my 03 coupe at 25k with a brand new clutch so keeping my fingers crossed it will wear at the same rate as yours. like you i prety much always run it down thru the gears and tend not to put it in neutral.
will let you know the wear when it goes in for service in a few months.

The stories of clutches on F1s, E Gears, Cambiocorsas having a very short life span is rubbish and normally by people who dont know how to drive them or havent had them set up properly.

The sort of mmiles we are talking here is great new, I have to ask though is your driving all motorway or some element of stop start commuting style driving? My car has 17k (lots of commuting)on the clock and I am getting slightly paranoid over potential clutch life as it has slipped occasionally when engaging a gear, not in gear though - suggesting it's adjustment and not wear?
The biggest difference of opinion seems to be between pulling away gently and allowing the clutch to slip or giving the car slightly more beans and getting earlier engagement. I have been using the first concept for the last few months and it has stopped any judder issues I previously had but it's bloody tedious... any further views on this much appreciated...

Hiya Tex,
To answer your question, my driving is a real mix of motorway cruising, country roads, and lots of stop start, so a fair mix.. I do (albeit rarely) get a bit of slip in 2nd gear, it happens when it doesn't quite find the gear when coming down through the gears and I want to pull away.. its slipped ocassionally too starting from standstill. Regarding judder when pulling away, used to get it a bit too, but now, I seem to have mastered it - guess it comes with experience. And as David said, the way to reduce the slip/wear must be to pull away with passion!!
You thought of coming to the FML meet on 8th Oct (in and around London)? see:
