water pump faulty

how can you tell if a water pump is faulty on a 3.5 V8.

The things that normally go are seals, or bearings followed by seals. If it isn't making a racket and isn't leaking it's probably OK. The impellor itself is metal and not prone to failure.

You could check the pumping action by removing a heater hose when the engine is stone cold, start it, give it a quick blip on the throttle, and see how much water is ejected. Set the heater controls to 'hot' first though!
