Anyone know of any these days?

Im finding adaware/spybot S+D isnt as effective as it used to - or perhaps this computers just got too much rubbish on it.

Has the game moved on?

Also, has AVG been beaten in terms of performance or is it still the best free anti virus out there?

Thanks in advance,
BCA

If those three are failing, you need to rebuild the machine.

If you are on the edge, you might want to add Windows Defender into the mix (as long as you have a good copy of Windows)

I run avast for anti-virus, Windows Defender for on the spot active spyware killing, I also have Ad-aware and Spybot but only run those occasionally as needed.

I sometimes use Clean Sweep as well.

All of:

Lavasoft Adaware
SaferNetworking's Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows Defender
eWido

They are all free and all work in slightly different ways.

It's the home computer, which I have very little tolerance of generally anyway. I'll tell dad its time to format and start over.

Wont be my problem next week as I should be back at uni with my computer.

nod32 is not free but £18 for 2 years is better than a free one like AVG that does not pick up all the viri and that virus came from a site that i knew would have viri, it is just that i wanted something off there

outpost firewall comes in limited and free or pro and not free, zonealarm blokced me from doing lots and dumped the free version

I used windows defender when it was first released, but it was pretty buggy and locked up a huge amount of CPU time every so often.

Is it worth going back to it now?

I suggest checking Javacool Spyware Blaster and MRU Blaster in addition to all of the above.
I have set Windows Defender so that it doesn't automatically start with Windows...try Startup Inspector
www.windowsstartup.com/

I also recommend system file check; see this page by Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP In Digital Media

Sadly not any single product is capable at protecting you from all virus' or spyware even ones you pay for. There is just too many new virus' and spyware programs comming onto the internet for these programs to keep up. The only real solution if you need to be 100% safe is not to download anything and dont use the internet. Of course that isnt going to happen so instead be careful with your browsing and only download files from reputable sites. In other words no porn, no file sharing utilities, no software crack sites and no free mp3 or video sites. You may get away with these sites once, twice or even 100 times but you will get burnt eventually.
