Rear speakers.....
Discussion
Ive decided to upgrade the ice in the Cerb. Currently i have a 6*9 in the front (under the stereo) and 2 x 3.5inch pioneers in the back. Ive done a search and someone recomended putting 3.5inch MB quartz in the back. So, ive just unscrewed one the speakers and the model is a pioneer TS-M871 which if you type into google brings them back at a price of $90 (when new, way back), which says to me that they must of been OK speakers as the MB Quartz are currently £30. What i want to know is has anyone upgraded these speakers and is the difference worth it? Also, has anyone replaced the 6*9 in the front with soemthing decent. I don't want to go down the route of installing amps etc....
Tghere is a thread runnin on speaker upgrades somewhere. I tried replacing my standard rear speakersnwith a decent set of Sony ones, the nice man at Halfords let me try them in out before buying, they made no difference at all, still sounded crap. I replaced the front standard Pioneers with MB Quartz's and a couple of tweeters, keeping the standard rear ones, and that made a huge difference.
I haven't been involved in ftting ICE for a number of years now but, way back when, we always fitted the best quality speakers in the front, especially decent mids and tweeters.
The bass came from the back.
The theory was based on going to a concert - you don't turn your back to the stage, do you?

There's another couple of ideas here. There are some really slim active subwoofers.
Halfords have the Alpine one:

and there's a really slim Blaupunkt version designed for fitting under car seats.
www.blaupunkt.com/uk/7606305001_main.asp I've seen this around for £100
Both of these may fit easily into the helmet storage space.

The problem is is that i cant replace the front door speakers as i dont have any. I only have the one 6x9 in the front which sounds as bad as the rears - no base at all.
No front Door speakers ?? Thats half your problem then, get some fitted.
Be brave and get that drill and hacksaw out

I had my Cerb sorted out by Carl Baker. She now sports a 6 speaker setup with Quart RCEs front and rear, plus twin RCE 6" woofers in the centre. The whole system is driven just off the head unit and sounds excellent, even though it's quite a lowly model in the range. At some point I'm hoping to move up to a Becker Cascade head unit (bluetooth plus a CF card slot for music and maps) and possibly a separate amp, which should improve things still further.
Be a bit careful where you source your Quart's from, as the US stuff is not the same as that you get through UK dealers (there was an acquisition of MB Quart and it's subsequent break up left some stock in the US market iirc). If you go with the RCEs which are a component system with separate crossover, you may find fitting a bit difficult, since the crossover is about quite a chunky fella and finding a home for it is apparently not that easy. I let Carl take care of this aspect, so I've no idea what you need to do to cope. If you're based in the South East and fancy a listen before you commit your cash, I'm only too happy to oblige.

To late, ive already purchased the MB quart - got them from a link on a previous thread and i think they are from America. Just my luck that! Upgraded the 6x9 in the front today - only took me 3hrs! The speakers screws are bolted from the back, had to drill them out and when i finally put the new speaker in which wasnt cheap, there isnt much difference. Looks like my next step is to cut the doors. Cant wait, ill wait until my hands stop bleeding.
It's not the cone diameter size that matters - cos you can allways enlarge the hole,
what does matter though is the depth of the speaker. I bought a lovely pair of beefy wattage speakers, fitted them, sounded great, jobs a gooden. Then I wound one of the windows down, two thirds of the way down there was a horrible grating sound and the window jammed. Took the door card back off and found the driver on the new speaker was
fouling the winder mechanism (bigger wattage = bigger driver). I,m back on the old speakers at mo. Moral of story is check your depth before you insert.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread as I have found myself with a pair of speakers too deep for the doors, and wondered whether anyone had used spacers in a Cerb? I haven't been able to source any, and am just about to set about manufacturing some from mdf, so if anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate your input...

The MB Quarts use spacers Ian.
Does Carl make them or buy them, do you think?
They come with the speakers. They're a plastic moulding specifically designed for them and I think there may be more than one spacer in the box to handle different installations etc. Perhaps have a chat with Carl, but I warn you now, you may end up buying Quarts if you do.
Steve.
I have 5.25" speakers in the rear pillars, and 6.5" in the front doors spaced to clear the window mech, all Rockford Fosgate, they repalced the Sonys and the improvement is remarkable. I have also built a sub that replaces the helmet holder sub that was already there, that frankly was cr@p, it just flapped about. I built a box that fits between the seats and it really sounds nice with an 8" JL twin coil sub, really powerful.
