Guys,

Would like to set up wireless, mainly for the ability to get my laptop on the net without having to swap the modem over from my pc.

I'm on adsl ...

Now, question is, if I buy a wireless router or one complete with modem, does this need a wired (ethernet / usb) to at least one pc. My phone socket is in a diff room to the pc, and I would like to avoid having to run a extension as I do now.

Thanks,

Martin

The ethernet/wired link isn't mandatory, you can use the wireless link only if you like.

When you first set the wireless adsl router up you will need to connect to it in order to configure it, which you can do from your laptop to the router using an ethernet cable, then configure it for wireless and set the security setting to match both the laptop and the router.

That way you will have a secure wireless network and not one that everyone in the street can use for free !

I personally would go for a modem and router combined, less posibility of configuration problems or incompatible kit. They are also easy to set up. As previosuly mentioned just need to link it up with a patch cable (usually supplied in box) set the config to you ADSL user name & password (few other minor bits from ISP you may need too.) then unplug and use it wirelessly from then on. Be sure to set up your WEP as soon as you can to avoid other people using it too.

Many ISPs are now sending out free wireless router/modems now. I'd say you have no need to buy your own kit - doesn't sound like you'll be using any advanced options
