After months of pushing them my folks have finally swapped from dial up to 1mb broadband. They are in a fairly remote area so cannot even get access speeds faster than this at present. What I want to get for them next is an ADSL wireless router. I've a Netgear DG834GT which i've found to be good.

Before I go ahead and get one of those (at £69) can anyone recommend a sub £50 alternative that is likely to be just as good? Linksys seem cheap, is there a reason for it?

Their house isn't huge so I don't think an enormous range would be essential.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Have to say, I went wireless for less than £10 ... my ISP provided me with a router with an ethernet port on the back (which I was lucky about), add in a Netgear FS105 switch and a ME102 wireless access point, and some network cables, and hey presto! One was about £6 on eBay, the other £3.50p.

(Admittedly I was lucky, and I only have b-spec wireless not g-spec, but my broadband is only 2mb, so no great loss.)

Back to your original question - for the extra money, I'd stick with the netgear unit. It's good, and proven, and you know how it works so will be in a better position to support it when your folks ask questions about it.

I have had a Netgear and a belkin.

The netgear was up and running in 10 mins, having never done it before. The other was IMHO a PITA to get working 100%

Netgear gets my vote
