MS Update causes PC to crash

On a more serious note, everytime I try to apply the MS Update patches, my PC shuts down immediately - rather disconcerting. It's not the system restarting as none of the patches have been applied. I know that there have been some virii which do this, but after running complete scans with Avast & AVG, spybot & MS Defender with up to date defs, nothing is being picked up.
The startup items all look OK & there don't appear to be spurious services running.
I'm at a loss at what to do now, any ideas folks?

Have a poke around in Event Viewer (Star > Control Panel > Admin Tools) and see if it mentions anything.
It might be a good idea to temporarily disable the auto-reboot function if your using XP (right click My Computer > Advanced > Startup & Recovery) deselect 'Automatically restart' at least this way if Update is causing a BSOD you can get an idea of what's causing it (bad driver, etc).
