The 400 hadn't bee running right since I took ownership of her. Whilst she went well when she was hoofed, trying to stick at anywhere between 10 - 60 mph on light throttle was a no-no - the old girl developed the hiccups

Well, after printing out the entire thread and checking everything in it, she was no better off. I decided to take her to the guy that fitted the 4.5 litre earlier this year as he knows his stuff with V8s and I knew he wouldn't rip me off / change lods of bits that didn't need changing

Basically, she was running too lean AND the dizzy was far to advanced (was advanced to 14 deg!) now shes been leaned up a little and timing knocked back to about 10 deg and she runs like a dream - NO MORE HICCUPS!

She now runs very sweet and smooth and appears a LOT more responsive

I'm well chuffed!!!

Ooh yer - there was a point to this thread - if your beloved is not running as your'd like her too, forget all the complicated stuff and ECU sensors and alike - look at the simple things first

What was the maximum advance set to ? and at what revs? and was the engine TDC checked with a dial guage ? (annoying aren't I? )

Dunno!
All I was told that it was set up to 14 deg advance on tickover, now its set to 10 advance on tickover.
Don't know about the TDC being checked with a dial gauge - I don't think it was but there was a timing mark which had been drawn on so maybe it had been checked when that was done?
