I took delivery of a new one in March. Mine is the Sport version with better equipment than standard and it is automatic. It is black with cream interior which I think is by far the best combination, particularly in sport version as the dark wood complements the car.

I guess it depends what you want the car for. I have a two seater sports car and a 320d Touring so have most bases covered. The 630 complements them perfectly as it is a luxury 4 seater with a good boot. It drives well and is fast enough without being supersonic. It does a great job as a daily driver and a long distance GT. However, it is not a sports car. I have been very happy with mine and get on well with the I-drive.

If buying new make sure you spec sat nav and automatic or you will find it difficult to shift on.

I would advise going for a V8, the 3.0i seems a little overwhelmed by the bulk of the 6, not much in it economy wise. Not terribly exciting to drive, although thats hardly the point - certainly a very 'nice' car and would be great for long distance euro trips and the like. I-drive irritating (as it is in every model), needs to be in sport mode with DSC off all the time IMHO
If rear seat space isn't paramount then I'd also be considering an XK8

Not only would rear space not need to be paramount it would need to be not required at all. I sat in an XK8 this weekend and it needs to be treated purely as a two seater. I had an old XK8 convertible and used it as a four seater to carry my 11 year old and 9 year old. That would not be possible with the current model.

If anyone needs the power of the V8, always needs to be in sports mode with DSC off all the time a 6 series is not for them. Another consideration is the additional depreciation of the V8 models. That premium over the 630 more than halves in value as soon as teh car leaves the showroom.

Fair point on the XK8 - the rear seats are as much use as a 911! The 650 Sport lists at #55k vs #49k for the 630 Sport - looking at projected residuals you'll lose an extra #2.5k or so over three years choosing the V8 - well worth it for the extra oomph from the bigger unit IMO. Dont see the issue with driving in sport mode, DSC off - in sharpens up the drive but is still way less sporting (and consequently much more comfortable) than - e.g - a 911.

Buy cheaply! £20k more than an M6 new but not selling second hand for much more. I was advised (at the weekend by a BMW dealer so he would say this) that this situation was changing as the number of M6s for sale was now much less than before.

I'd research the market carefully.

This is probably worth a read:

Why do you want one? Seriously?

If performance is the key then I'm inclined to think the Alpina options are rather more appealling, otherwise if really sporting then 997/AMV8 is more sporting/desirable. M6: good car, but too expensive.... consequently if you can find one with substantial £££ off then you may be in bargain territtory.

Granted, they are not cheap, but for me offer something slightly leftfield which appeals.
