Any idea what this is?

Whilst rooting around in the boot, I came across a new box that I have not found before.
It is stuck to the left hand side of the petrol tank, the box is aluminium with various wires coming from it and there is a grey battery taped to it. My gut feeling is that it is something to do with the alarm?
Anyone know what it is?

A battery you say.... could it be a Tracking device?
Not too sure what they look like, although it doesn't seem like a good place to hide it!

Remove all that (what looks like) gaffer tape and see what identification marks can you see.

Call it bravery or stupidity but I decided to cut the tape and investigate further....Doh.
The battery is a standard rechargable cell that is 6volt & 1.2ah.
The alloy box has a Motorola label on it with a couple of numbers: RTD No: 12741 & STRK9701UK. Web search's find nothing!
The cables run behind the petrol tank and possibly behind the rear seats. Could it be a tracking device?
No big bangs when I played with it which suggests its not dangerous - the module that is!!!!

Ok. I have been very brave and removed the 8 screws that hold the lid on. Inside is a complex circuit board. 2 wires exit the box and go to the battery whilst another 2 wires go behind the petrol tank. I really don't think it is a mobile phone gadget. I have taken photo's and I will post them soon. There is no info on the wiring diagrams....i'm am at a loss. It does look a little hi-tech for a TVR part and it does have a Motorola name on it. I guess the next step is to chase the wires back in to the car and see if it is connected to the alarm.
