Really crappy day at work yesterday saw me driving home pissed off at 10pm. Was in a foul mood and desperate to get home (missed a dinner with friends, wife in a bad mood, etc) so was driving a lot faster than usual.

Was driving on the A40 and overtook a new black 5 series BMW (roads were pretty empty). Two mins later the BMW caught up with me and the blue lights came on... Looked down at the digi speedo: 84mph in a 50mph zone..

Got signalled to pull over. We'd both just managed to stop on the hard shoulder when the cop car suddenly pulled out and roared off down road with all lights flashing - got a huge dirty look from the driver as they went past. I'm guessing they just got some other incident call to deal with. The car didn't seem to have a dash camera and it didn't really look like a traffic car (looked more like an armed response car or something).

I'm guessing 84mph would be an automatic ban so I did I just have the luckiest escape ever? Could they still do me for this just with my numberplate?

Not necessarily - although once you're 30mph over the limit or more, there's a presumption that a ban should be applied unless you're able to demonstrate compelling circumstances why they shouldn't do do.

My brother got done at 92 in a 60 zone (just as he completed an overtaking manoeuvre) but managed to talk the bench around to giving him 6 points (to add to his existing 3 points) and a fine of around £500. I think the bench's thinking was that he knew that one more offence would lead to an automatic ban and so they cut him a break this time on the basis that he'd be for the high jump if it happened again.

Not through choice! It's the wife's car. I recently sold my own car and am sitting on the proceeds until I can find a suitable 993 on which to lavish them. In the meantime, the Clio is (marginally) better than walking.

I don't do criminal/RTA work anyway!
