When I try to play a plain old audio CD, Windows Media Player errors on each track saying "The selected file has a scheme that is not recognised by Windows Media Player"
If I tell it to try to play anyway it comes up with the following error…
Windows said:
C00D1197: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
* Your computer is not connected to the local area network (LAN) or to the Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.
* The path to the file is not valid. If you typed a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Open URL dialog box, verify that the file name is spelled correctly and that the path to the file is correct, and then try again. If you clicked a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.
* The server is not available (for example, the server is busy or not online). Try again later.
* Some network protocols in the Player are not enabled. Enable all network protocols, and then try again.
* The proxy server settings for the Player are not configured properly. Verify that your proxy settings are correct, and then try again.
Error ID = 0xC00D1197, Condition ID = 0x00000000
The CD is in a local drive!
I downloaded Musicmatch Jukebox, which works, but I'm fed up with it constantly asking to upgrade and update. It also takes ages to launch. I'd rather go back to using WMP if I can get it to work again! Any ideas would be appreciated.

Run Spybot S & D and a virus scanner with most recent updates.
Try reinstalling WMP... why it can't play an audio CD I've no idea as it's a pretty basic thing to do.

Thanks for the ideas. I have been experienceing the problem for some time now (not a high priority to fix) and have up to date anti-virus software (AVG) and run Spybot periodically. I haven't tried re-installing WMP because I don't have a disk, like always seems to happen when you get a new PC these days! also the "recovery disk" does exactly what every recovery disk I've ever come across does AKA nada!

Yes, in a CD player but not in a PC drive, thats what the copy protection is specifically designed to do.

It should say somewhere on the case and yes, it is shit.

Ok I've put an old CD in (Fleetwood Mac Rumours) bought in the '80s so shouldn't have any new fangled fancy copy protection and the same happens!

I know this is a bit naive (esp. considering it's M'soft) but surly a copy protection playing error would actually use the words copy protection somewhere?

...and I was so confident that would work! Followed the instructions (even did the registry backups, what a good boy am I!) and guess what? Same Nice try though.

Currently running WMP Version 10. should I try upgrading to 11 or rolling back to 9?

Just a thought.

Thought I'd try updating codecs. Dont know if codecs are used for plain old CD audio but here goes anyway.

ACPI drivers maybe or any device specific drivers for the CD drive if you can find some.

Something has got hosed internally, its just locating the culprit.

Have you tried playing it with other software, such as Winamp, iTunes, Realplayer? That might determine whether it is WMP specific or something more general

Ahh.... well I suppose it's worth a shot.

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives

Find the drive your trying to play the disc in and right click, select properties.

Go to the Properties tab in the window that just opened.

"Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" should be near the bottom and have a tick box beside it. Try toggling this (i.e. if it's on turn it off and vice versa) and click Ok. It might ask you to reboot... do so if needed.

Did that work?

All new codecs. rrrreeeeebbbbboooooottttt No fix!

Both CD drives (different make but both IDE) do the same. One of which is brand new.
Musicmatch Jukebox plays audio CDs no problem WMP 10 (now 9 but might be 11 in a bit!) errors saying "The selected file has a scheme that is not recognised by Windows Media Player".
I'd stick with Jukebox if it didn't keep pestering me for money!

Try uninstalling Jukebox, might be part of the problem.
