I think i'm being ripped off!!!

My car went off to the garage to be fixed due to loss of fluid from the power steering and various other minor niggles. Recieved a call to say that the steering rack needed to be replaced along with the Radiator, a few minor oil leaks were found and a couple of other bits but nothing to major. Total cost including labour £3062.78 
. After the initial shock I made a few calls one inparticular to a company who refurbish steering racks. I expained the situation and there reply was this " you cannot buy a new steering rack for a Tuscan because the company who made them has gone bust , however we will refurbish your one for £130 plus vat". I then called back the garage to ask about refurbing mine they said " we will try however it will cost around £600 plus vat and fitting (from the same company). In addition to this I looked into the cost of a new radiator. £380 plus vat from a well known company (and its an all alloy rad which i've been told is better than the original). I was quoted at the garage £580 plus vat and fitting.
As you can imagine its left me feeling a bit p****d off.

I am not asking for names and please do not post a name, but was it a Dealership, an indie, or a general repair garage?
If the rad outfit you are going to deal with is Leven then yes they are highly respected and the product will be better than the standard.

Yes it was Leven and the garage in question was a Dealership!!
The same pepole did my radiator a few days ago (I saw your car there)
They charged me
£225.00 Labour
£190.00 To recon the rad
£21.00 Antifreeze
+ VAT
Total £512.31
Hav'nt had the car that long so did'nt know what to expect does sound a bit much to recondition a rad, one of the guys there was also rude to me.

This is one of my favourite gripes, you can't name a dealer or warn other Pistonheaders by naming and shaming someone who has obviously tried to rip you off but anyone can call TVR to bad to burn. I just don't get it, surely the rules for one company (both limited companies)should stand for all? Why can a dealer not be named and shamed yet the manufacturer can and often is torn to shreds? Please someone explain the rules on here for me?
When i was doing repair work I go fed up of recon racks, i've never found a company that can recondition a rack properly .. i eventually insisted that the owners pay for a new rack or i refused to do the job .. i'd end up taking the rack out two or three times before i would eventually get a reconned unit that didn't leak, would self centre properly and was fit for purpose. I reckon i lost money on the vast majority of rack jobs i did in real terms

Sadly does it mean that new TVRs will be geting recon racks if they're no longer made? wonder how that works then ...?

Perhaps there is one way we CAN get around the ahem....suppossed rule.
As JSG once did a survey of rebuilds perhaps we could conduct a similar survey of Dealers and Indies. A simple spread sheet containing the usual customer survey data, such a method does not become personal but one can still rank in their opinion the services received and a picture can be built up of which dealers/indies are good and/or poor.
I would be quite happy to collate the data for those who wish to send it to my email and present it in a spread sheet. How about some of you guys suggesting what kind of data you want collated? May I suggest that rather than using customer names we just simply use the model and year of vehicle, then the preceding columns would contain headers such as Company Name, Dealer or Indie, Type of Work, (in this column a selection of Body Repair, Engine Repair, Elect Repair, Service 6K, Service 12K, Mech repair), Attitude to Customer care, Cost of Work, Value for work done, Recommended?, Comments.
How about that as a starter?

I'm now in shock....Last night a friend of mine(who is a BMW engineer) carried out a pressure test to see how bad the leaking radiator was only to find that the radiator is infact not leaking, only a couple of pipes needed to be replaced (the cost of this £3.00). Tonight we will be inspecting the steering rack. Anyone fancy a bet that this will be ok as well. Total saving thus far £3059.78. I WILL BE REPORTING THIS COMPANY TO TRADING STANDARDS>

Just keep in mind that mine was pressure tested recently due to a suspected leak but checked out ok even though it wasn't. The crack only opened up and started to leak once the radiator was really hot.

Naming and Shaming.... the reason is simple really there are ALWAYS two sides to every story, when someone posts it is only ever a one sided opinion.
Secondly, this site is PetrolTeds business, and as such any potential damaging remarks could result in legal proceedings taken out against him.
So the naming and shaming policy is rigorously enforced for those two reasons alone.
Hope that gives you a brief insight.
