Hi all,

Does anyone know who is the best provider of domain names I have looked around and the prices seem to vary quite a bit for the same name (.com).

I would also want to purchase one that will host the site as well, I know that there are plenty out there, just wondering if anyone has good experience of a nice, easy to use one?

Cheers

Matt,

How about clicking on the banner on the top right of the screen.

It belongs to Jamie B (who, no doubt, will be along shortly to advise).

And thoroughly recommended by many Phers (over 50 I think) - of which I'm one.

Register1.net (just click on the banner at the top of your page). Run by a PHer too (but even if it wasn't I'd still use them).

See now all that might be of interest if I understood any of it!

I can build a (very) basic web site, and have been asked to do so buy a friend who is setting up a new business. I therefore need to purchase the domain name and rent(?) the web hosting space required for the site.

Stupid question I know but is that what Register1 is offering? It is not that clear for a total newbie such as myself.

You can buy a domain, or a domain and Website / email hosting.

The VDS accounts allow you to have your own Webspace / email / webmail
The VDS Pro allows the above plus gives quick install Shop / Forums / Blog / Image Galleries / Web Calender and so on.
The VDS Pro comes with a Free domain too.

Both are available on a 3-4-2 special offer.. buy for 2 years, get the third year FREE.

Let me know if you have any more queries...

and ta Kinky for the prod

Matt,

VDS is £33 a year, if you buy the 3 year package
and VDS Pro is £66 a year, if you buy the 3-year package.

Slight thread hijack, but very similar...

Jamie - do you do any ASP.net hosting too? I'll talk to you about it at BT&P, but I'll forget if I don't ask now

ASP.net requires windows.. the Register1 VDS's are Linux (php) however the Register1 Dedis are whatever OS you choose.
My Managed Services Company Serverstream.net also offers High Availability, High SLA, High Security Managed Windows Servers too (but stick a 0 on the end of the Register1 prices)

Cheers Jamie,

I'll look at your dedicated stuff now and see if my business takes off enough to stick a zero on the end of the overheads

Thanks Jamie, much clearer. I will talk it through with my mate and point him in your direction - best he buys it as then it is all in the business name.
