Help - ran for 200 metres and then died

I have run out of ideas with my S2, which has just died. I had a problem a few weeks ago, which I identified as the fuel pump as I couldn't hear it when I turned on the ignition, through reading the various post on the subject. I have fitted a new Bosch pump and it started at the third attempt and ran well. It ticked over great in the drive and I revved it up to 3,500-4,000 without a problem. I thought great and took it for a blast but got only a couple of hundred yeards up the road and it died and wouldn't restart. Luckily I was close enought to home to push it back with the help of a neighbour but I am at a loss as to the problem.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be welcome.

Is the pump running? Are you getting electrical power to the pump? Do you actually have any petrol in it?

I can hear the pump running OK and did leave the car running for about 30 minutes in the drive before taking it out. Yes, I ahve checked that there is petrol in the tank!

This may sound daft, but I had exactly the same problem, after lots of headscratching it turned out to be the wires actually connecting to the fuel pump, they needed securing correctly.

Nice easy cheap fix.

make sure the fuel regulator isn't bust and letting all the fuel go straight back to the tank - happened on mine recently. Engine was turning over fine but no fuel smell - pump running fine as well - you could hear the fuel in the return pipe if you stuck your ear to it while getting someone else to crank it over.

Just a thought, what happened to the old pump? Did it break up inside ,ie are there any bits of it travelling in the pipe towards the regulator causing a blockage??

My immobiliser used to switch off my fuel pump randomly.

I had the same thing happen to mine. After much head scratching, it was electrical wires rubbing on the chassis and shorting!

Had a very similar experience this weekend. See my recent thread titled 'Fuel Pump?'

After seeking the advice of several S series PHers I replaced the fuel pump relay and the problem appears to have been resolved. Certainly worth trying if other repairs are unsuccessful!
