When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.

In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy -- you get a lot of car for your money, and £1,000 is still throwaway money when it comes to cars.

I had one of these as a courtesy car once.
Very pleasantly surprised (has low expectations).
I noticed that the vicious speed bumps (in a farm lane that I drive to work)which shake right through my P38 Range Rover, were barely noticable in the Honda. Must have good suspension.

A friend of mine just bought a '93 Prelude 2.2 Vtec with 81k on it for the same money. Full Service History, new tyres and brake discs, lady owner for 10 years, full original tool kit, tis the stuff of dreams, she'sonly majestic. It's absolutely immaculate inside and out..

There are some great deals out there lads if you're prepared to shift through some pig sh*te.

yeah thats a bit dull, i like the sheds that are prestige cars or some sort of turbo nutter thing thats cropped up for £350 after being in a barn for 8 years not an estate (unless its one of those btcc volvos!)

One of these was my last workhorse and I miss it so much. Rarely let me down although expensive to repair and run. Having said that it did have 190000 on the clock so no disgrace. I would advise anybody thinking of getting one of these to make sure the discs and pads have been recently done or walk away. The discs sit on the inside of the hubs and are a nightmare to change. The auto is very hard on brakes, other than that a great car!

The Capri has the same miserable arrangement.

In order to replace the front springs, you need to remove the brake caliper, the outside wheel bearing, remove the hub, break the steering arm ball joint, the bottom balljoint, remove two pieces of brake hose and disconnect the front anti roll bar.

It is such a pain in the arse that I changed the brake discs and stuffed some braided hoses on whilst I was in there.

Never again.

2 weeks ago I bought my current runabout - it's a 1999 Nissan Primera GT, runs a 2-Litre 16V engine as used for the BTCC that year. It has A/C, electric everything 6CD etc etc and I only paid £1200....good value for money I think!!

patH these discs are nothing like doing your capri, there a total nightmare you have to pull the hubs sometimes destroying the bearings its supposed to stay put but dosent,in saying that get a good one of these cars and they run for ever,its most important the auto trans fluid is changed once a year or your in for expensive trouble,garages & dealers miss this one.routine servicing is all thats needed,but yes boring as hell.

Not too shabby, but at the end of the day you still have to tell that pretty blonde at the bar that you drive a NISSAN PRIMERA, (even she knows how dull this is, GT badge or not) and that's not likely to get you any brownie points... Hope you're happily married! WS

26 mpg from an ancient petrol engine? Doesn't sound wrong. Depends what sort of driving you do I suppose... it's traditional to give these sorts of details. And not to bump 5 year old threads.
