Constant high temps

I have a little problem with my running temperature, it is staying at 90 even when crusing. I originally had this probelm, went to sort it, broke my swirl pot, which I have now had fixed. The swirl pot has now been re-attached, cooling system has now been re-filled but it's still up at 90. Could it be a faulty thermostat or any other ideas please?

Do the fans cut in? if so are they permantly on? i.e can't get the temperture down

fans cut in at 90 when standing still, but still this still doesnt take the temp below 90 when cruising.

Oh no, when out in it this afternoon and it just wants to stay at 100, now I'm worried!!! Could it be that the radiator has a blockage or the water pump is not working? How do I know if the water pump is not working?

Have you bled the engine and radiator thoroughly?

Take it to the dealer ASAP (drive slowly); high temps are very damaging to your engine.

Mine was the same got the rad recored and fitted a new 74deg thermostat sooo much better now runs at a constant 80 ish and only gets hot enough for the fans to cut in in heavy traffic . Get your friendly local garage to do the work cost me £215 all in , nice colour by the way.

i had a leven cooling kit fitted which gets the fans to come on earlier and a different otter switch...my 94 griff 500 now cruises at 70 degrees and idles in traffic at 85 degrees with the fans on.

For my peace of mind this leven upgrade was well worth the cost...check with thm as to the current prices.

Mine was a bugger to get all the air out. You may have an air lock in it somewhere.

If it's a pre-serp then I'd run it from cold with pressure cap off the swirl pot. Keep topping it up with water, eventually the stat should open. You should see movement of water in the top of the swirl pot. Make sure the pipes to the rad are getting hot and have water in them. Squeeze the pipes to make sure they are full of water.

Top it up and Put the cap on to pressurize it.

Check the level once it's cooled down again.

Most cooling problems are as a result of either air in the system, usually the rad, or the rad itself. Check for a less than perfect matrix.
The cooling system is generally up to the job if maintained properly and overheating is rare.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll take the radiator out and give a good flushing then fill it up again and see what happens. Another thought, my heater decided to quit on me about 6 months ago, do you think that that could be a contributing factor?

Mine has run happily with 90 degrees on the main gauge for the last 18 months - the only time it went over that was when the fan relay failed !

It ran at 90 with a Modwise kit and now runs at 90 with a 2 stage Mark Adams fan kit .... interestingly though when I look at the Mark Adams digital gauge I have had put in the glovebox it is showing low 80's and is set by that for the fans to cut in on full at 83 degrees. Me feels the original gauges are not exactly accurate !

I guess my concern is that it has always sat quite happily at 80 then all of a sudden off it goes at 90 and above, not normal for my little lad!

Thats surely either a blocked rad or an airlock?
