My site is currently www.freewebs.com/yellow-tvr
i was wondering if there was anyway that i could get my site name as just "www.yellow-tvr.com" ?

i understand this would mean doing a new site on a different program/site so everything will be completely different but i really dont mind because i think it it would be better for me to have my own site name instead of the freewebs.com bit before it.
is there anyway around it?
All help is appreciated,
thanks,
Dan

p.s - as you can tell im no computer genius i dont know any of the terms that half of you will use so please keep it basic

2 ways ....

1. Simply register the domain name, and redirect the URL to your existing site

2. Simply register the domain name, and move your pages from your free site to the new site.

Which ever option you choose I personally recommend Register 1, as do 51 other PHers, and you can find him (Jamie B) by clicking at the banner at the top of the screen now.

Kinky's first option, goto register1.net type in your domain you want (which is avaliable) and yours for £5.48 per year.

once bought you direct that to www.freewebs.com/yellow-tvr via the control panel on register1.net, you can even have your own e-mail address, ie: you@yellow-tvr.com

other option is get the webspace with the domain name and the domain name is automatically set up to point to your new webspace.

or just give jamieb an e-mail via his profile.

It's basically as trevor says.

If you go for option 1, then it's a few quid a year and that's it.

If you go for option 2, you're looking at £33 a year (if you buy the 3-year package). This effectively replaces your free webspace, and may be an option to consider down the road sometime.

If it's just a hobby, and a bit of fun - go with option 1. If you want it to be more presentable (by having your own domain URL), then option 2.

Jamie B will be along tomorrow morning, and he can help clarify.

As i say - he's been recommended by 52 PHers (www.oilypages.com/recommendations.asp?id=5342).

Regards,

K

Thanks you two, youv'e been very helpful.
The only thing is that i didnt want to pay anything (you could call me a cheap skate.... ).
So i take it there is no way to get a free host for my site then?

You have a free host, its the Domain bit you need to pay for for now to redirect www.yellow-tvr.com to www.freeweb.com/yellow-tvr

As Trevor says.

It sounds like you want Option 1 - just register the domain name.

It only takes about 1 minute to do, and is usally live in a few hours.

But it costs .... only a few quid.

indeed, the new domain will be live within a few minutes (it can take a few hours for ISPs to pick up transfer changes)

I would suggest you just go for a hosting package (from £33 a yr it's silly not to!) you get what you pay for with hosting.. and with 52 PH'rs Reccomending Register1 it's a safe bet

The domain does come with free email / web forwarding if you REALLY want to keep the costs to a nothing...

Oi, Beesty

If I've got a VDS and two URLs can I point the second URL at the same VDS account in a virtual directory?

So mainsite runs in usual HTML root

secondsite runs in HTML Root/secondsite as a relative root for that site?

yes, that's what we call a 'virtual domain' it's more propper like to do it off subdomains, but either is possible

Drop me a mail if you want the detailed 'how-to' but it's rather self explanatory.

JB - I've just sent you a mail requesting a copy of that ... might be useful for me. It might mean upgrading some of my accounts.

Thanks.

www.freenetname.co.uk

^ISP with free domain and 100Mb hosting. used them for years... it's great.

Now use www.1and1.co.uk as there is more space and more functionality.

Edit: just checked there website but they've been taken over my madasafish!!!! oh well no more free hosting!

British Person
British Site
British Hosting..

why would you want to host your website in Germany when there are equally priced UK hosted solution.... totally aside from the fact it's run by a PH'r, giving money back to PH..

Can you send me those monkey instructions matey?

I can only see 'forward web to' rather than hooking the new URL onto a directory on my VDS

Thats how the Virtual Domains work.

forward it to www.yourvds.com/siteb (or http://siteb.yourvds.com to be posher!)

If you're feeling like coding, you could also do it via .htaccess with header locate redirecting people depending on the hostname they visited, but the above is easier for those who need to stick a few personal sites on their VDS.

Whilst they are intended to be a Primary Domain only solution (we specifically don't want resellers on VDS accounts!) the forwarding does serve the purpose... those who need full functionality can just upgrade to a dedicated VDS at any time... or even a Dedicated Server.
