My ice detector has been playing up for a while and whilst the radiator is out for a repair I noticed a black plug with a small (broken) resistor sticking out the end just rattling around infront of the radiator. I presume this is the thermistor for the ice detector. Does any one know the part number and where a replacement can be obtained?

Apologies if this has been covered but after trying various searches I haven't been able to find the info I wanted

Well, it's supposed to be I thought, and I just shorted mine out and taped it up to put the bloody annoying light out as the sensor was patently kaput and I couldn't get to the bottom of what value/range thermistor is needed (certainly aint paying the tens of pounds TVR want for a pennies component) . However, I've now found another (equally broken) one zip-tied to the chassis rails on the drivers side of the sump and the cabin disco continues in cooler weather...?

I think the ice detector/warning lamp is only on the post facelift cars. Mine is a '98 model.

Perhaps someone who knows could post a link to the rlevant part in a Maplins catalogue or something because mine's been dodgy for yeras. I get red in summer, green in winter and white when it's raining wobble It's not a problem but it's one of those jobs I would do myself if I knew where to get a new bit for the end of the wire (See I'm an electrics wizzard ) Rich...

They don't all have them Thomo (in fact I'd say most don't?). Lights between dials have varied a bit but on mine are (T to B) Alarm tele-tale; Oil Pressure; Battery Charge.

Mine's got one and it looks like a snowflake symbol between the two main dials. Goes green red or orange dependent on temperature outside. I think it's quite useful actually.

Mines got one and it works.
Jolly usefull bit of kit although why it can't just have a digital readout of outside temp God (or perhaps PW)knows.
I think it means;
Red: Put back of roof up and start to close windows
Orange: Put coat/scarf/hat heater on as the windows should be halfway up by now
Red: Christ its cold! Fit top part of roof and realise that as you are best lowering windows to accomplish this task you are not out of the cold yet.
Just had a thought. The thriller "The spy who came in out of the cold" was presumably NOT written about a man who had recently been driving his TVR with the roof down!
Just in case any newbies read this and get the wrong end of the stick I'm only joking, my windows work just fine

Go to Maplins website, do a search for temperature and at the top of the list is a digital temperature gauge for £9 with an 11mm display and a remote censor on a 3 meter wire.

I am going to get one of these tomorrow and cut a slot in my dash (stainless and not veneered so it will be easy!!!) and see what it looks like.

Might be a slight improvement on an LED???
Failing that Maplins also do the thermistors that you would need to replace a broken one.

Provided you know the value/range.... does anyone?

I have the alternate one fitted, which I've heard is the most common version - still has the snowflake design, but the light sequence goes: nothing/nothing/red!

Mine works. Having said that - if it didn't, I don't think I'd worry about it too much.

I'm not particularly worried about it just thought that for a few pence and not alot of effort it might be nice to have it working again. I suspect my resistor is OK it is just one of the legs has snapped. I may try taking it in to maplins and seeing if they can interpret the stripes!

I have the nothing to red version on a '98 450. I rigged a variable resistor to test it and still don't get any other colour. So figured it was something behind the dash and left it for another day!

If anyone knows where to look I will have another go.

Cheers

Assuming i took the correct bit off (the random resistor floating around in front of the rad!), the resistance at room temp was measured at aournd 8-9kohms, so I am guessing that a 15k thermistor should be about right. not managed to get one and try it yet.
