Our DSL router went tits up last week and I replaced it with a new NetGear WAG534G ADSL modem/wireless router. All well and good except for one thing - we can't use FTP to upload anything. I've disabled all firewall and NAT (we have a hardware firewall for those) and every other service seems to work ok except FTP. I've tried using PASV mode but that doesn't work either. FTP connects ok and gets file listings, but when it tries to upload it always gets to 4716 bytes and then stalls, often timing out with a 'transfer aborted by server' error.

We have BT supplied router we can use in the meantime, but this one blocks incoming e-mail - it's an auto-configuring router and BT have the wrong SMTP address and seem incapable of fixing it rolleyes

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Is port 21 and the transfer block open in the firewall?

21 is the command port and then there is a range which does the transfer, its usually quite wide and varies depending on the FTP server used.

None of the firewall settings have been changed (port 21 open) and as soon as I replace the new router with the old BT one we can FTP ok - which I think makes a pretty clear case for it being the new router It doesn't help that the new router is not as configurable as the old one irked

Is the FTP server running in XP on a Windows machine?

If so, I could offer a suggestion.

Our main web server is running Windows Server 2003 SP1. But we're having connection problems to other servers too.

Sorry Pete, it was a joke based on my weekend spent tearing my hair out with MS stuff.

Does sound mighty strange. I've got the same router and run two FTP servers (one XP, the other OSX) with no problems at all. I know the router comes pre-configured with some DOS blocking (which you can turn off for testing purposes) but that's a major long shot. I haven't got anything special set on my apart from the FTP port (20 & 21) forwarding to the relevant machines.

Neil - are running the FTP servers locally, ie world + dog have to go though your router to access them? We're trying to access FTP servers on the outside world, not our office network, through the router.

Really long shot, but have you tried different FTP clients? I had a similar problem with a version of WS FTP (admittedly it was a really, really old one) but no problems at all with Leech FTP.

Tried with several clients: Dreamweaver, SmartFTP, Leech and FTP Surfer - same problem with all
