how do you fix door drop??

can anyone tell me how to fix this? I noticed that my door drops now when I open it - you can lift it about a 1/4inch and it feels a bit wobbly....is there a way of tightening? ta, steve

Check the top hinge - the hinge is just a bolt that the door part of the hinge pivots on. The door can unscrew this bolt a fration of a turn at a time untill the bolt drops out and the door 'falls off'. Another great peice of TVR engineering!

If you can see the end of the bolt sticking out through the top of the hinge, you may be OK, if there is a dip there, check the bolt straight away...only way is in through the door speaker hole. I thread locked mine in place when it came loose.

Or the door hinge may be loose attached to either the car, or door. wobble the door and see what moves..

thanks Virgil - I'll have another look! if the bolt has come 'unwound' a bit then I assume the bolt head is what you get at thru the speaker hole? do you know what size it is too?

Exactly - cant do it up tight or the door won't close/open!

Can't remember off the top of my head...something around a 5/8-3/4 or metric equiv...can check tonight though...still need to refit the speaker....

Virgil you are a godsend - am in France at the mo and you were right - door about to drop off! it's a 17mm socket and i could only do it up about a 1/10th of a turn at a time cos there's no room to move the rathcet!! must have been on its last thread! all ok now so thanks again for the info..steve

Was just about to post 17mm. Had a fiddle whilst taking a break to try and start the car...imobiliser issue...

It WILL undo again, so make sure you threadlock it in the right position.

Don't forget to check the other side. I was feeling very smug after fixing the driver's side, not so smug a couple of months later when the passenger door fell off too!

These have got to be the only bolts on a TVR that don't seize up! The bolt should stay put, and the nylon bushes which take the weight of the door should rotate on the bolt. However, what seems to happen (mine's the same) is the bolt rotates and gradually undoes. I've tried a blob of sikaflex on the exposed thread, but it didn't hold. I think it's just one of those things to keep an eye on.

Silkoflex is more of a mastic?

Try cleaning the 'hinge top part' threads out (will possibly have grease or oil in there) along with the bolt threads and use thread lock (or araldite etc) and it should stay done up. Mine has, but I cleaned it thoroughly, put some thread lock in the 'recess' then screwed the bolt up to the right place, then left it to go off before using the door.

I had to put a jack under mine to lift and hold the door whilst tightening the bolts. Right pain in the @rse!

Go and see the lads at Automedon in Blackpool. They helped (or even did) build your car in the first place, and I'm sure they'll be able to re-align your door. Top lads, we always take their mugs to all events, and the sweets are fab!
