Just receieved a NIP from the Met.

38 in a 30 at 18:05 on 16th Sept at Bounds Green Road nr Cline Road E/B N11

Trouble is I have never driven the Saab into London, let alone North London and I was safely at home at this time with the car on the road outside the house.

There is no number for me to call them, I've never had to respond to a NIP before and am rather concerned at the fact that there is someone out there driving around with my number plates on.

HELP!

I've been through all this. First thing is to report this to the Police. If the people who have done this are criminal enough to clone your plate, they may also be criminal enough to use the car as a getaway after a drive by shooting or a bank job. You could end up being woken by an armed response unit. Next inform the DVLA and then challenge the NIP, requesting photographic evidence.

Sadly, from my own experience, I can say that you will have to prove your innocence in every case. Somebody cloned my motorbike registration onto a Nissan Micra a couple of years ago and I had to counter up to 12 speed, bus lane and congestion zone infringements a week until the Police finally caught up with the individual...

Thanks Malc.

What a bloody fiasco.

Yet another case of the criminals getting to behave as they want and the working man who plays by the rules has to jump through hoops in order to prove innocence.

Prove innocence?

I ask you.

wot MAM^^^^ said.

Plus from now on, log every journey in your vehicle(s) until the matter is resolved.
I use a daily log in a diary, date, from to times, any other info eg if using unusual route. Seems anal I know but reference to notebook helps build a defence for that time when you can't say that "I've never been to x." Also start to utilise other means of establishing whereabouts, eg your office may have a clocking system?

Utter utter PITA, but in these days of guilty till proved innocent.

I believe the issue of this (as far as S172 goes) is up in the ECHR today

Plotters, I don't suppose you were posting on PH at the time of the alleged offence, were you? If you were, there's your alibi if you need one.

I was around that sort of time, just trying to get that info now...

I just hope the photo shows a patently different model of car.

That is astounding, surely the system can tell the difference between a bike and a car - and a flippin' Micra as well, oh the shame

Absolutely infuriating yes. At one point I sent TFL a copy of my log book and a photograph of the bike, together with a note explaining that I was happy to do their admin for them, but they'd have to pay my standard charge-out rate. They sent me back a letter with a copy of the appropriate legislation, pointing out that I was guilty unless I could prove myself innocent.

Ah Transport for London, that set of idiots manage to make the average scameraship ticket office seem positively motorist friendly and the epitome of administrative efficiency. TfL, pah! You were lucky you didn't have the bailliffs come a-knocking, or maybe you did and that's another story.

btw the scamerships can't tell the difference between a Beemer and one of those 8mph max electric milk float thingybobs. I kid you not.

This is from the Met or specifically 'The Police Of The Metrolpolis'

Which sounds very DC Comics for some reason...

I thought it was Innocent until Proven Guilty? When did that major change of the law take place?

Approximately 1997.

Another thing to consider in case it is a similar vehicle. Is put some form of sticker in the front and rear window. Then take a picture of both in situ on the vehicle with a time / date stamp. When you report re the clone of your number, state for the crime complaint that you have taken these picture. It will not help to much regarding the initial incident but may well help in the future...that is for incidents with photo evidence.

We told the government this would happen if they introduced speed cameras, didn't we?

They said no, didn't they...?

Another triumph, Tony....

Hmm, so not only speeding but posting onto a 'dodgy' web forum at the same time! eek

I can see the judge searching the cupboard for his black hat as I type ...
