Boxter plastic rear screens........
Discussion
Hi guys,
I bet this has been covered before, so forgive me.
I was wondering if the rear screen of pre-facelift Boxters is easily removed/replaced when it inevitably gets scratched/cracked. If I owned one, I don't think I could be bothered to get out of the car to help fold the rear screen neatly like I had to do in mate's Boxter the other day. What's the point in having a hood that will disappear in 12 seconds if you need to get out of the car every time you want to go al fresco??
Also, could you fit a hood from a face-lift car to an old Boxter to take advantage of the glass screen, or is this impossible?
Thanks guys.

It's a fairly expensive job to have it replaced at an OPC but any reasonable auto-upholsterer or (even sail maker depending on where you live!) should be able to do it well and reasonably cheaply. The glass screen from the facelift can't be retro fitted - the whole hood is different. Karate chopping the hood is a pain - I was assured when I got mine that it will eventually crease correctly and keeping it in a heated garage with the hood down will help. I don't have a heated garage and it's now nine months old and still doesn't fold without help!

Yup - the Boxster chop is an inescapable part of the pre-MY03 Boxster ownership experience. I found that one could only do an unattended opening of the roof on very hot days in summer.
Still...the bit where the 12 seconds really matters is putting the roof UP when a shower starts...and you don't need to get out of the car to do that.
Its liveable with IMHO - but the glass rear window in my MY03 S is excellent...a worthwhile upgrade.

I have just had the rear screen replaced on mine by a private specialist.
I can't say I need the 'karate chop' I just reach back and pull the top of the screen from the inside and the fold sort of runs down into the middle of the screen. I do tend to drive with the hood down a lot so the electrically operated system is great. Even if you have to get out of the car it is still pretty fast for a convertible.
